I have a 77 F150 Custom with a 400, Can anyone tell me what Rear-end and Trans. is in my truck? I looked at the sticker on the cab where the axel code is and there is NOTHING there...... No axel code, no paint code nothing..
Need more information on trans, like automatic or manual? Rear end will be a ford 9", there should be a tag on one the bolts on the front side of chunk.
Thanks. Which Rear-end is better, The 9" or the DANA? I'm not really looking to tow a whole lot, I would like to get better performance out of my truck.. Me likey acceleration..
The white sticker on the door jamb (B pillar) is the Certification Label.
The VIN and: PAINT, MODEL, BODY, AXLE, TRANS and other codes are located on the metal Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.
F150 with a 400: The rear axle will be a Ford 9 inch, the A/T is a C6.
Dana 60's were used in F250's, Dana 70's in F350's. Some 1977/79 F100's used Dana 44 rear ends, but most of the F100 & all the F150's have Ford 9 inchers.
F100 & F150's have 5 lug wheels with a 5.50" bolt pattern.
F250/350's have 8 lug wheels with a 6.50" bolt pattern.
Just looked at the plate, And the trans code is either a C or a G, Can't really tell its pretty worn out. And the axel code is 13J.
There's no such thing as a C, it's a...
G = C6 Cruise-O-Matic.
13J = the 13 is the rear axle code. Because I'm on vacation, I do not have the parts catalog to decode what 13 is, but the third digit of J refers to Power Steering.
Cruise-O-Matic.... haven't heard that in awhile. Is it a good Trans. for these trucks? And has anybody converted one from a column shift to a floor shift?
Converting to floor shift is the same as any other rig, and not hard at all. you just have to get a truck shifter (taller base). The C-6 is arguably one of the strongest transmissions ever built, and can be built to handle upwards of 1000 hp. Same with the 9" rear. All it takes is money. I suggest staying with the 9", Bigger is stronger... but bigger is also heavier. You want to make all rotating mass as light as possible.. especially if you "likey" acceleration like me. Get a locker, and some Strange axles, and your rearend will be good to 500hp. Take the C6 and throw in a shift kit, upgrade the servos, and some other auto mumbo jumbo, and the c-6 will be nigh indestructable.
I have a 1975 F-250 and my trans is a C-6. My rearend is a Dana 61. The info should be on the rearend cover, on a little plate. It can also be stamped on the axle itself. I hope I have been a little help! tin-man
13J = the 13 is the rear axle code. Because I'm on vacation, I do not have the parts catalog to decode what 13 is, but the third digit of J refers to Power Steering.
13 = Ford 9 inch / 2.75-1 / non Limited Slip / 3750 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.
wow.. now them are some gears.... i didnt know they even went with that tall of a gear in trucks. Mine have all been 4.11 except for the one i just got which is 3.55's. I figured they were probably the lowest that went into trucks
Her is my Z-Gate in the Blue truck. Cable shift C6 was a breeze to instal 1-inch hole for the cable to pass thru then the 4 small ones to mount the shifter itself. Clears the CB but it was not in for the pic. I drive this one everyday and is no problem operating it plus it definetly works at the track I have a Mega-Shifter tht will go in the Race truck same cable operation so should not be a difficult instal either.
Nice. Looks EXACTLY like my truck, Same color, Same ripped seat too lol. I would not expect the gears to be that tall either, I was hoping it was a locking diff.
