I am 99.9% sure this is the problem with my tranny. Truck started shifting erratically right after giving my brother in law a jump.
Got a question about the process. Do you do the light, medium, heavy acceleration in normal mode, then the n-r, n-d, d-r, r-d then repeat the same process in tow/haul. Or do you do the light, medium, heavy in both normal and tow, and then the n-r etc etc etc just once.
Anybody who has had to do this before have any tips? Seems pretty straight forward, just wanted to clarify..
I thought just driving it would relearn but it isn't. It's been about 2 weeks now and it sucks! the shifting is very erratic. Sometimes I could start the truck up and it runs great until the tranny gets warm (about 150) and sometimes it starts acting up as soon as I start the truck. The erratic shifting, slipping, hard shifts, etc. Sure sounds like it need to relearn.
Autozone can't read Ford trans codes. The Tow/haul light will flash for all trans codes, but the CEL will only light for certain ones.
You do need to reset the PCM to get the learning to work right. Sometimes the learning can learn itself into a hole that it can't find the way out of. Disconnecting both batteries will clear the memory and allow it to start over.
I stand corrected. I did not know about the tow/haul flashing.
the Auto Zone in Los Alamos had a new actron 9190 that can read most of the extended and enhanced codes. BUT, I have not tested the tranny codes on a ford, just a GM.
BTW, Mark, Do you recomend a larger cooler, I do not tow allot, but I live in the Rockies, and go off roal allot.
Thanks alot guys! I have not disconnected the batteries yet. I knew about the tow/haul flashing for tranny codes because my '00 did that when the pcm crapped out. I live in a pretty hilly area (NW PA) so once the tranny gets to the slipping point, it is rough driving. keeping the tranny from slipping up a larger hill, I will go from 60mph to maybe 25 by the time i get to the top. I will reset the batteries

After switching back to stock from a tune, my tranny did this exact same thing. Waited for it to relearn, never did. Did the battery disconnect and went through the relearn process in the tech folder and all is well!

Thanks for the info Mark! I sent you some positive rep points for your efforts, as always it's very much appreciated.
