The left rear shackle on my 1993 F 250 broke. Anyone have suggestions or tips on replaceing the shackle as well as the sleeve and bushing with out removing the entire spring?
I have the bolt out in the spring pearch, but having a hard time removeing the bushing and bolt in the spring itself. If I have to use a torch, where would be a good place to purchase a new bushing, sleeve and bolt?
well its a forgone conclusion you are NEVER gonna get the 'bottom' of the shackle and the bolt off the hanger....so, drill out the rivets and reaplce the hanger.
now use a bi metal blade in a sawzall, or a cutoff wheel, or a plasma cutter, or some suitable method of destruction and get the head off, then drill out the rubber in the spring eye and use a ball joint installer to push out the rest of the bolt for the top half, then get all new parts and well heck, its easy now.
ps - do the other side for grins. if one side went, the other side is considering it.
The problem is the bolt is seized in the inner steel tube in the rubber. Just use your torch to cut the shackle close round the bolt head. Then set fire to the rubber bush, keep it burning for about 10-15mins. You will then be able to easily push the bolt and rubber out. You should be able to get a new bush at rockauto.com including poly bushes which are much easier to install. Good luck with it.
I was surprise my ford dealer had a shackle on hand. $35 include bolts. Interesting thing was it had 3 bolts and 2 nuts.
I was able to get the lower bolt out with out heat, but a can and a half of penetrating oil. Napa had the bushing and pin but that will take a couple of days to get, not a stockable part.
Now the fun will be trying to get the spring lowered enough to reatach it to the perch.
I think if I use a heavy duty ratchet strap, some chain and the front end loader as an anchor i should be able to get it back in place without taking the spring completly off.
Thanks for all the info.
Glad I found this site, great information
Well after the schedule calm down I fixed my spring.
I ended up putting new springs front and rear.
Both shackles on the rears.
I had checked the fronts, found the one spring eye split and ready to break.
Needles to say, all were replace. Truck rides 100 times better.
Now for the modifications to add in the air bags in the front. The break lines through the frame are in the way. I should be able to move the brackets. Hopefully I can get that done before the snow starts.
