Hi Ford clan,
I just got a set of Prothane rear spring & shackle bushings, part # 61003-BL for my 73 250 4x4.
I pushed out the old rubber centers/bolt sleeves, left inside the springs and shackles is a thin steel liner.
The steel liners inside the spring & shackles stick out past approx 1/8" to 3/16" on each side of these parts.
I put the new bushing inside the steel liners,(per instructions) and I am about 1/4" too wide on the bushing width to put these new bushing inside the spring hangers or shackle hangers parts.
If I remove the steel liners, then the diameter of the bushing is approx. .160 too small (measurement) for the spring or shackle parts.
The instructions do not say anything about removing this lip from the steel liners to make the bushing fit.
Also found that the rear spring bolts have egged shaped the bolt holes in the front spring hanger brackets on the rear axle. How do you get the rivets out of the frame,(have 35 gals of gas about 3" away and I don't want to use a torch). I will have to weld up and drill new bolt holes after I get the hangers off.
Any one have any ideas or suggestions or maybe have found this problem when they changed bushings?
Center punch the rivet, drill a very small hole down the middle, all the way through the rivet. Next grind the rivet flat. Using the previous hole ream it out in steps to at least 1/4 inch. Then take an air hammer and punch it out. If it does not move, ream the rest of the rivet out and leave just enough material so when you force the air hammer punch through the hole it takes out the back part of the mushroom on the rivet.
Rebocardo,
Thanks for the reply, question, what is a air hammer? I don't have access to one, all I have is a 5# hammer and cold chisel or torch and about 3'' of room between the gas tanks/frame to work in.
Thanks, Don, nvreloader.

I didn't have that exact problem but did take out a number of rivets. I just ground the head off the side I had access to and used a BIG hammer and punch to knock out the rest. A couple good hits and they popped right out.
