We have a 89 f150 4x4, 302 with 5 speed manual. It will go in every gear, but the shifter is really loose. I pulled the 3 screws off the top plate and the shifter comes right out. I'm not sure about the two pegs sticking out in the top of the tranny. BTW the tranny is the M5R2. Is there a link to an exploded view maybe?
ya mines the same not sure what transmission it is for sure (95 f150xl 300 I6) but also my 3rd and 4th gear positions dont line straight up and down the 4th gear is down and to the right a bit from 3rd
Under the boot there's a bolt (17 or 18mm wrench, I can't remember) that clamps the stick to the lower part of the shifter. If this worked loose or wasn't tightened enough if the shifter was ever off, it can create a lot of slop in the shifter.
I had a really loose shifter a while back on my M5OD. There was actually a teflon gasket type thing that sits on the ball at the bottom of the shifter. The old one broke and that's when the shifter got really sloppy. Replaced that and she was smooth again, but you have to separate the ball of the shifter from the stick that comes up into the cab to replace it. might check to see if that's still there.
There's a two piece plastic bushing that surrounds the bottom of the shifter ball. The bottom bushing usually crumbles into small pieces. It's held in the shifter cover by two press fit pins. Item 68 in the diagram. There are two pins only one is shown in the diagram. The pins need to be tapped out before you can install a new bottom bushing.
The bushings are item 106 and 104 in the diagram.
Here's a picture of the two bushings which I believe are identical.
At one time Ford did sell the bushings. Don't know if they still do. They do come in the M05r2 rebuild kits that third party companies sell.
that looks like my problem. I have the pins but no bushings. We just got the truck a week ago so my guess is that someone took those bushings out or whatever. I'll try to go Ford this week and I will let you know. thanks for the exploded view, that really helped.
sweet...while we are on the subject does anyone know what would cause my gear positions to go wacky like they are? its just 3rd and 4th gear they dont line up like they are supposed to
