Shifter removal question

How do you remove the floor shifter from a 52 Merc M-3 non-synchro 4 speed, without removing the top plate and shifter forks??

I have searched this forum and the factory manual, but cannot find a solution.

The shifter needs to be removed so I can pull the engine and tranny as a unit, I know there has to be a way, but I think I'm too blind to see it.

The round collar around the base of the shifter unscrews, then the shifter lifts out.

I didn't have a chance last night to post a diagram of the shifter:

Thanks again Bob, that diagram will definitly help.
I was going to try and pry that cap off, but didn't want to damage anything that may not be replaceable.
Hopefully it will unscrew after 56 years of rust and debris is removed.

8MTH7220 .. Shift Lever Retaining Cap

Fits Warner T18; T19; T98 transmissions from 1948 thru today.

The good news: it's still available from Ford.

Here's the bad news:

MSRP: $57.80 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $41.62
