First off I'd like to say hello. I'm new to the forums and bought my first ford truck (2006 f150 5.4l 4x4) a couple of months ago. I have a quick 4 x 4 related question though. This is the first four wheel drive i've ever owned so I know very little but when I turn the electronic shift to 4 low the truck seems to roll faster when i let off the brake then it does in 2 wheel drive. The truck engages in 4 hi and low but im used to 4 wheel drives "crawling" in 4 low. Is this normal? Thanks for any help you guys can give a newbie.
If memory serves me correct, you need to come to a full stop and shift into neutral before engaging 4 low.
I'm haven't had to engage 4 low in my truck yet, so I do not know if it crawls slower or not.
Just make sure that when you are in 4x4 mode (hi or low) that it is never on dry pavement.
Snow or mud only basically.
if you are doing what i think you are doing( stopping and putting **** to 4low from 2hi b doing this the 4hi will engage but the 4 low will not until you go to N then shift to 4lo) at this point you should be in 4lo and the 4x4 and 4lo lights will be on, hit the gas and the truck should lurch forawrd and when you get off the gas it should slow way down fast, IF YOU DO THIS ON DRY PAVEMENT DO NOT TURN YOUR WHEELS WHILE 4X4 ENAGGED.
To get into 4Wd-Low, you need to come to a complete stop, put shifter into neutral, keep foot on the break, & shift into 4-wd Low......Yes, it crawls like a turtle due to the low range.......
Rusty, you would be correct on the previous gen F150s, but these new ones have an electronic throttle, not old mechanical linkage. When mine engages 4low, the throttle behaves COMPLETELY different, as it's designed to be quite a bit smoother.
It'll still move if you stomp on it, but at part throttle, it's a lot more controllable in 4lo.
Yes, it will seem to accelerate faster on no throttle, as the torque is multiplied in low range, but you'll note first gear tops out A LOT sooner.
