Hey guys, got the first snow of the year and I'm having some 4-wheel drive problems. I turn the **** to put it into 4x4 and it makes a little noise(almost like a buzz or click) and then the 4x4 dash light turns on but no 4x4. Same goes for the 4low. Any ideas?
When driving in snow/ice fish tailing....look out both from windows to see if a front wheel is spinning in place while trying to catch traction and its not....
Ok well I couldn't seem to get the hubs off my after market rims. But I did pin point where the noise is coming from. Forgive me if I'm using the wrong name for it cause I'm not even close to be a gear head...not yet anyway!
Its coming from a small black box maybe the size of a soda can that has to electrical leads coming out of it. This black thing seems to be attached to something important not sure what it is. But its under the middle/center of the truck. Does this black thing need to be replaced? what is it?

The hubs are not related to your rims so to speak. They are there even if the rims are off the truck. The locking hubs on your truck are on the front axle in the center of the rim, the part that sticks out in the center of all the lug nuts. There should be a plastic **** of sorts right there in the center. If you look close, there will be writing on the outside edge that says "Auto" and "Lock". If you can't see any of this on your truck, then the center cap of your after-market rims has covered it up.
The black box I can't help you with. But someone here will know what it is.
That cap should be removeable. However, you may need to take the wheel off the truck to pull that cover off from the back. On a 4wd with hubs, you don't usually install those caps on the front wheels.
In my experience, if the 4x4 light is coming on, then the shift motor is working properly and the transfer case is engaging. It is possible that the motor to shaft connection, or something in the transfer case, is physically broken, but that appears to be exceedingly rare.
I have experienced the clicking you describe myself, when I tried to shift to 4x4 while not moving. Essentially, the gears are not aligned and it can't shift in, so it will retry a few times and you hear the motor and the gears clicking together.
The far more likely problem is the front hubs. They are vacuum actuated and are a common failure point. You need to get to the front hub locks and lock them manually. If you get 4x4 this way, then you have isolated the problem. If you don't get 4x4, then you can go back and look at the transfer case again.
Not that I know anything from anything but the click sounds more like the click a starter would make when it's malfunctioning. And sound sounds like its coming out of cylinoid(sp). And it doesn't do it a few times it just does it once right when you turn the ****.
