I want to replace the shocks on my 2005 e/baur 4wd excursion and need help choosing between KYB's Gas Adjust and Monomax shock types. Has anyone tried either of these? Please let me know.
I've had BOTH ... Ranchos on my '01 X and Bilsteins on my '05 X. I'm switching my '05 over to Ranchos soon because I am not happy with the ride quality provided by the Bilsteins ... too "choppy."
Along the same lines, my EX has better than 105K on her and should be needing new shocks all around, recently my wife got an 06 Navigator and I know the IRS goes along way toward the smoothness, but which shocks would give the "cushest" ride. Riding in the Navigator makes my truck seem like an old wagon.
I just bought the KYB Gas Adjust, my mechanic suggested the KYB's, he has them in his 06 Lighting. Also said Lifetime no questions asked replacements. I looked at the MonoMax and they seemed to heavy duty, I drive to work and tow 4000# boat. It's my daily commuter so I wanted a smoother ride.

Funny, I was planning on tryng some Rancho's the next time I needed shocks, just so I could compare them to the Bilsteins, but a couple guys who have had both talked me out if it because they said they hated the Rancho's and wouldn't part with the Bilsteins!
I guess it's a toss-up between them both, depending on the person and each rig, eh?

Yes, it is a personal seat-of-the-pants opinion type thing. But honestly, after I installed the Bilsteins, I was tempted to put the 52K-mile OEM shocks back on my '05 X. I disliked them that much ... and that was after I put about 45K miles on the Ranchos with the '01. I installed the adjustable Ranchos ... dialed them in to their medium setting ... then I never touched them again.
