BTS for the last trans you pay for. All you pay for in future is the R&R and shipping if it is within the 2 yrs and outside, you pay for shipping. Either way, trans fix is on him,.

My 2000 7.3 4x4 had the same failure loss of 3rd and 4th. I pick it up tomorrow hopefully. The failure diagnosis was failure of the valve body with a rubber piston that hardened and allowed pressure to not properly be controlled to the clutch pack assembly.

If you had the same failure and only 83,000 miles you might consider replacement of the valve body. I had 148,000 miles and the fluid had been changed frequently with the Ford spec oil so I suspect you have a similar failure. I would have used Bryans but Gustov and Ike just would not allow me enough time to take that approach so I used a local person who specialized in the diesel Ford 100 tranny.

Just read the 83,000 miles part, and it's an '03. Shouldn't this be under warranty?

The trans warranty in '03 was 3 years/36,000 miles.

Even if it were 1million it would never be enough. We'd figure ways out to push them past and beyond.

I had my trans done by a shop in east mesa (solid shift) and he builds the same thing that BTS and JW does but for less money. My trans has all the upgrades and bigger valves that any of those guy use and I even got a billet duel disc converter with mine.Nate has been doing trannys for along time and has done a many many of the 4R100 on PSD and he has never had any ever come back with a single problem. While BTS and JW are very good they are not the only ones out there that know what they are doing. JMTC.

JW and BTS have their own custom parts. How is it "the same thing for less money"? I don't know about JW but BTS will fix the trans for as long as you own it and he is in business for no charge at all. Will that local shop do the same? For free, that is.

The quality of a job and satisfaction is determined only by the customer who pays the $$ .

For each person the definition of quality is what it means to that individual.

There are many ways to build a transmission, but if it is built and meets the quality definition of the customer then it was a quality job.

My dog is bigger than your dog serves no purpose in the definition of quality due to each person having their on definition of quality.

If the truck is only a show truck perhaps a stock tranny is quality for some, but if it is a heavy hauler perhaps a after market beef up tranny is more appropriate.

But you must also consider the design specifications of the equipment. If the equipment is designed to a specific job and is operated within those specifications then repairs could be satisfactory using factory stock parts.
So application, specifications, and individual definitions / expectations of performance determine if a good job was provided.

My transmission is being built by a shop local due to Gustov and their skills. I have met and discussed the rebuild on my transmission with the person who will do the work, before the work started. Expectations are clear. I know what parts, upgrades are being installed and made the choice on which upgrades I wanted installed. I am sure I could have the truck shipped to another state with a great transmission installed. But given MY specifications are met locally I will be satisfied if MY definitions of quality are met.

My definitions:

1) No leaks
2) Meets all shift points
3) No issues that require return
4) Transmission becomes a piece of the truck and forgotten because it just works.
5) It does have to perform as if it were a new truck transmission and meets the FACTORY specifications.

It does not have to have :

The most expensive torque converter
Upgrade Eprom for quick shifting on the drag strip.

There are many opinions on what a / how a transmission should be built but the final choice is up to the customer that pays the $$.

Ya'll have a great day. Texas watch out for IKE comming your way.

When I got my BTS, I was told "I dare you to break it". How many trans builders can say that to your face?
