I've got a 2008 F-250 Superduty - King Ranch 4x4 Crew Cab Long bed.
The center rear view mirror (on the windshield) has a small box behind it with a small round switch on top of the box. I haven'tbeen able to find any info about it in the owner's manual(s) or online. Does anyone know what it is?
When I bought the truck, they offered me a "Low Jack" (sp?) anti theft system. I declined because I don't like the idea of big brother or his minions tracking me by satellite. I'm wondering if they have the system insalled and it just isn't activated? If so, I wonder if it can track me?
Call me paranoid, but I just don't go for this idea that I need somone to "watch over" or "watch out" for me. I don't like it. I don't like cameras on street corners either. That's probably for a different thread....
I don't think your paranoid, I feel the same way about onstar, but onstar's call center can open the mic in your vehicle with a court order to eaves drop. At least low jack will only tell them where you are.
I haven't seen the switch before, but I have seen the box on earlier models. I have a feeling it's for the compass since some of the aftermarket compass mirrors also have a bit of a box at the mount.
Thanks for the help, but the switch at least is not for compass calibration. That's done thorugh the info center buttons to the right of the speedometer (Info, set, reset). I read through that section in teh manual carefully as I was thinking that could be it too.
It's up tight behind the mirror, so there's no way ot get a decent picture of it.
I'm becoming convinced it's adevice installed by the dealer so that the CIA and Space Aliens can monitor all my movements. So I'm going to make a little tin-foil enclosure for it to keep their signals from reaching it. It will match the tin-foil beanie I wear! (J/K)
Don't have one on my truck but have them on wife and daughters Mercury's. Don't know if it's the same as yours. On the Mercs, they are auto dimmers, the photocell for the auto headlights and the switch is a slide switch that determines the length of time the courtesy lights stay on after you exit the vehicle. Follow the wires and see where they lead?
I also have an 08 F-350 King Ranch that I purchased used last year. Looks identical to yours. I have the same box behind the mirror, and Ford seems to think it is for a gps system. The build sheet on the truck says it came with the 6 disc changer, not the gps system.
It is not for the auto dimming mirror, that is built into the mirror itself. There is a small button on the bottom of it, that you can click, but nothing happens. I am at a loss as well, so if anyone knows that would be great!

I believe it is the compass. When I bought my truck, I asked the dealer about changing out the mirror for one with the temp/compass display in the mirror. They asked me if I has a black box behind the mirror, which I do. They said that if I removed the factory mirror, the compass heading in the instrument cluster information display would no longer work.
