hey guys i got a 03 excursion 6.0L diesel has 96kmiles on it, i just picked it up bout a month ago, this is my first run with a diesel... but anyway my job requires me to sit in my truck alot and leave the truck running with the a/c going, i thought it was the rear a/c at first but as of tonight its obviese its not...
i guess i left my truck running for a hour or 2 tonight and leaving work it had a burning smell and it blows white smoke out the exhaust going down the road as i leave work and it clears up after a few miles and the smell goes away for the most part, could anyone shed some light on me on what is happening with my truck thanks any advice would be greatly appricated...
You cannot leave these engines idling for that long without creating turbo and EGR problems. Also, prolonged idling can lead to fuel dilution in the oil which can cause major engine problems and a runaway engine if enough diesel gets in the crank. One way to prevent this is to do the high-idle mod, look in the 6.0L Tech Folder for how to do this. With this done you flip a switch and it goes up to 1200 rpms when idling and helps keep the engine warmer.
it problem is as cartmanea says will cause oil dilution, this is called "wet stacking" ie the fuel is not all being burned at long idle intervals and tends to build up in the cylinders, thus diluting the oil and causing the smoke when you drive away, increasing the idle is the best way to elimanate the pblm, this raises cyl temps and burns the fuel more completely!
Wow Thanks guys, i would have probably ruined my motor without yalls advice, it was beganing to scare me, its only done it the last couple days after idling long periods of time do you think it could have messed anything up with in that amount of time or not? it seems to be running fine now so i dont think it did but what do i know lol this is all New to me...appricate the help guys...
well have you been leaving it idling for hours on end for a month now or just a couple days?
I would send some oil in to blackstone and see what it says. A hour of idling is 33 miles driving so you will most likely need to consider that as a factor of your oil change intervals.
i have some but not as bad *** latly, the last couple days ive been having to sit a little longer and ive noticed it happening with the last couple days, i need to go get the oil changed anyway right now but wanted to make sure i hadnt messed anything else up possibly...
yep blackstone-labs.com its the greatest $22.50 you'll ever spend. If you have to send some now just leave a cup or two in a tuperware container. Make sure you take the sample about halfway through not at the first or last of the drain.
no problem have fun with her. Also check out the rest of the files in the tech folder there is a ton of information about our trucks that will help you in keeping the 6.0 happy.
