Cutouts

Im building my 400 now and I have Headmann Headers that I will run on it. It will be a street legal truck so open headers really isnt an option. However it would be cool to have cutouts so I could open them up on occasion. Are cutouts alot of trouble? They aren't very expensive I think I would just get the ones with wing nuts I dont need the fancy electric stuff to break. Are they more trouble than they are worth? Or do they work good?

Cutouts well yes they are neat for that so when you want to open er up and let er rip the ones with wing nuts are no trouble at all just take em off and there you go put em back on the electric ones I would maybe avoid

Just seems like one extra thing that can break is why I said that. My truck is used for mudding I didnt know how well the electric ones would work when muddy. But it would be nice to be able to run stock classes with mufflers and the open header class.

thats true... I think they nice ones are a sealed unit though. So even if they get wet its ok... I would think as long as you wash the mud off them before to long it would be alright...

I could see that, on the cheaper or the homemade units, but the better made, and more expensive units do seal well.... Atleast the one's i have seen/heard.

Well it doesnt look like its an option for me, I was told that I would have to have 2 carbs, one that was tuned for open headers and 1 that was tuned for mufflers. That or have 1 carb that is easily tuned and learn how to do it well.

Too much work for me I was wanting to just be able to run both ways without fooling with the tuning, Oh well.

The only problem I see with cutouts is that you better carry some oven mitts with ya, unless you only plan on opening and closing them when the exhuast is cold!

Complete and utter BS. Yes, you will only be able to tune 100% for either setup, but cutouts WILL give a little more power. You may run a little lean with them open, but shouldnt hurt anything.

I dare you to find a person that runs cutouts and has 2 different carbs.

But the difference would be minimal at best, unless he is going from a plugged up stock exhaust to cutouts.

Its just not worth the $$ to have 2 carbs for something as simple as this.
