-Hey guys maybe you can clear this up for me. I have a '78 f-250 with a stock 400 v8. I put Summit Racing headers on it a couple of weeks ago. Then I put 2 cable operated exhaust cutouts behind the collectors. That's right cutouts.
Anyway, a couple a people told me that the valves of my engine were going to sink into the heads because of no backpresure. Is this true or just some kind of myth? (with the cutouts open, it is the equivelent to open headers)
I'd really hate to do away with the system I built because I can go from stock exhaust sound to an all out monster truck sound by pulling the cables.
-I don't know what you mean by crystalizing. I've heard of cold weather warping valves, but this is the first time I've heard of valves sinking into valve seats.
A-h-h-h yes, good ole "lake pipes". Remember the beach boys and "my 409 she's so fine"? The were singing about its' lake pipes sounding so fine when opened up. I had a set of those cutouts from JC Whitless on my 46 Ford Touring Coupe and 389 Pontiac with 3 deuses on it about 25 years ago. I would rumble through the Marietta square with them open and drive the local police KRAZY!!
-Whew! Thanks guys for the info, I was getting pretty anxious just driving around with the mufflers. I do love my cutouts dearly too. Why just last night in town, I had the cables wide open sitting at a stoplight, and she had the 'ol slow idle cam sound going on and a coulple guys in the truck next to me give me the thumbs-up. No matter how proud a guy is of his truck, it still feels good to get a thumbs-up once in a while.
The cut-outs below the headers will not cause any problems. The only time that exhaust leaks can cause a problem is when they are between the head and header(or manifold). During deceleration, it can suck cool air back into the ports causing an exhaust valve to burn.
