I have a 1967 cj5 that I am fixim up to make it road worthy and for off road use. I have seen a few pto winches but I dont know where to get one and would prefer it over an electric one. Where can I find one or what other options do I have. This is not goin to be used for rock crawlin but more for multi purpose.
Take a look on Craigslist, assuming you have a model 18 transfer case,a PTO bolts right up. a cover on the back of the case comes off,and in its place you bolt up the PTO. Ramsey and Koenig were the most popularly offered PTO winches avail from jeep. Ive got a 65 CJ5,and its got a front mounted Ramsey 8000 lb PTO winch. Possibly even better than CL would be ebay, but your likely to pay more there. Ive seen complete set-ups on Ebay, removed from CJ's, Winch, driveline,PTO,frame that mounts them on CJ framerails, etc. I dont have any experience with Koenig, but ive owned 3 vehicles with the Ramsey. If you arent in a rush, you might save a few bucks buying the pieces individually, the Ramsey winch was popular on various Jeeps and early IH scouts, just make sure you get the PTO drive from a CJ application, some of the other jeep and Scout applications may not fit the body/frame configuration of your CJ. As you might imagine,PTO,driveline, etc, etc. do make the installation more complicated and time consuming than a 12V electric, but they are great for some uses. One final note of caution, since this winch will pull all day long, regardless of load, keep an eye on your temp gauge! your either stationary,or moving dead slow, its really easy to overheat your engine if your cooling system has any deficiencies.....Best of Luck,Bob
Hey thanks ive never used craigslist before is it like ads in the paper? I dont have any problems with the coolin system on it so I think it would work pretty good. My friend just bought a jeep same thing as mine just a year older and it had one on it but the guy he bought it from sold it seperate so he couldnt get it. I do have the dana 18 tcase. I dont really like ebay so ill keep an eye out for one around here or on craigslist.
Craigslist is basically a all in one place, just like the classifieds in a news paper, but its digital and free. Much easier to navigate through too. Im not sure where your from but MOST bigger towns have there own craigslist page.
Ive bought at least 5 vehicles off Craigslist ads, sold at least as many, bought and sold wheels and tires, a couple winches, fishing gear, etc. Because its free to advertise, you often see some sellers who write some really crappy ads, poor descriptions of items, etc. because of this,a savvy buyer can sometimes get some screamin deals! look for ads that arent really categorized well,or poorly described. my 2nd F250 4x4 was advertised as "69 F250,runs strong, big tires" literally that was all. when i called its seller,i found out it had a brand new 360,an extra set of doors,a front fender,a tool box full of extra parts, and when i said that big tires seemed a little unusual for a 2wd,he said it was 4wd! A badly crafted ad,without much info,at a good price, and i was first to come see it with cash in hand!
Im from bluffdale utah its about 30 miles south of salt lake we have a thing round here called KSL classifieds its kinda like craigslist but ive looked there and theres not one in there maybe ill have to just keep an eye out for one.
Do keep looking, craigslist and elsewhere, eventually you should find one at a price you like. I just missed out on one here locally,a few weeks back, seller wanted $150 for it! at that price i would have bought it without even having anything to put it on!
