So would going from a 33" to a 38" tire give me better or worse gas mileage?
In theory, it would. In the real world, HA HA NO!
Your cruising rpm's would be lower, there fore meaning you would be using less, gas, but you use a little more gas to keep the momentum of the bigger tires going, than if you had the smaller tires, so it kinda negates the crusing speed rpm drop, add on top of that, the drastic loss of performance, and the motor having to work much harder to get the bigger, wider and much heavier tires rolling, your mileage drops, im thinking im down in to the single digits with my 37"s.... I was at around 15mpg depending on how i was driving.

if a gear swap is performed, u really wont see much difference
Gears are expensive though! Anyways, I might be getting an S10 blazer. Its really nice, my dad said he would sell it to me but I had to pu tan engine in it. Then I can insure my truck just for a weekend wheeler.
I have and always will use Motive gears. Blue box, the competition sets. Very strong. Good lapping job and they have quality install kits.
I am running 4.56s now with 38.5s.
The truck had 31s stock with 3.73s. Do the math and it comes out to an almost stock ratio. 16 mpg with 31s 16 mpg with 38.5s. Not too shabby.
MPG calculations performed by GPS mileage calculations.
I'll take your word on that! Haha. My dad wanted me to get really REALLY high gears to get better mileage.. He told me to get like 3.08 gears with my 33's. Can you believe that?
my 460 would be perfectly happy on the street with 3.08s and 33's but it spends no time there anyway. with as much power as a 460 has 3.73 would be about right. 4.10 good also, it would depend on what your doing, mudding and climing loose hills require lots of wheel speed, my 460, 3.55s and 33s make wheel speed like nuts, I wish I had 3.73s though because crawling hills and rocks in my truck will work that tranny pretty good, unless I had a 4 speed then I'd be good to go. I'm gathering parts for the 4 speed swap now but I see 4.10s with 35'' LTBs in my future also. Assuming interco gets off their bums and starts selling the 35'' ltb....
I do hill climbs, mud bogs and trails. Aswell as it being my daily driver. But its summer time. Not a whole lot of mud. I'm going to make a big mud bog on a property my dad owns. 10 acres to mud at.
