Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm new to the 4x4 scene. I've got a Dana 60 axle and the passenger side axle shaft appears to be loose. I can wiggle it at the u-joint (up and down, not in and out), but the wheel itself seems to be tight. Again, this is new to me. I'm assuming a bearing, but which one????
Thanks
hmm sounds like your describing a bad u-joint, If thats the case you will need to remove the wheel, and the brakes. Then the unit bearing, then the axle shaft will slide out and you need to press the u-joint out and pressin a new one. I can walk you through the process a little less briefly if you want me to, feel free to PM.
Unit Bearing? No unit bearing on a 96....
Sounds to me more like a bad spindle bearing than a bad u-joint. Either way you need to pull the hub and spindle and see what's going on.
ohh duh! haha yeah deffinatly no unit bearings, just saw powerstroke in his sig and was assuming it was a newer one. assume = A** of U and ME I know... in that case yes, could certainly be spindle bearings, I believe tech. term is trunion bearings??
Sorry about not including the year in the post. I knew it, why shouldn't you? D'oh!
You got it anyway. I wondered if that's what it may be. I can do repairs, it's diagnostics I'm not that good at. FTE RULES! The U-joints don't appear to be loose and they certainly don't feel or sound like they're dry or binding. Since I'll apparently be pulling it apart anyway, I'll know for sure when she's apart. Any special considerations for pulling the spindle off??
He's dealing with a balljoint axle, so, there is no separate caliper mount. I just had mine apart on the weekend... It was a royal PITA. The only advice I can offer is to wrap the spindle with a rag before you start hitting it, and DO NOT hit the threads or where the bearings ride. Work one side until you can get the tip of a screwdriver in behind it, then use that as a pivot point by hitting the other side(drive it back towards the screwdriver,) work it back and forth with a couple screwdrivers as needed until it comes off.
Your PSD probably has bolt on calipers right? The bracket for those does bolt on to the knuckle, but, on a KP axle, the spindle goes through the caliper bracket, which is a seperate casting by itself..
That was the ticket. Spindle bearing was REALLY loose. Everything else looked and felt good. I'll be picking up the parts from Napa on Monday. Have to replace the rotor too. It was pretty thin on the inside. Thanks again guys.
