Sometimes it's a good thing....like if you put up some good info or provide help to someone. Most times though, it just turns out to be a popularity contest and they are handed out like high-school diplomas.

Usually when you help people in a thread or someone likes what you post, they will send you rep points. They mean nothing what so ever. You don't get a free DP-TUNER if you get 10 green boxes. Just a way of saying thank you.

I always send the person that reps me a PM to thank them for the rep. But you don't have to do that.

Like cleatus said, yes it used to be something special you got when you made a post worthy of it.

The only problem with that is, if you have 10 green boxes, you probably already have a DP-TUNER. Lets make it Miller Lite.

Not that im being a "total" dick about it but some of us have been here for YEARS, mostly every night, and (to me at least) it felt good when someone gave you reputation points, for something you spent a few minutes on, searching for an archive, or going out to your truck and taking a picture, or doing something that required you to use your previous knowledge and resources. Then along comes the "Off Topic" stuff and people hand them out like candy in a parade.

In my original post, I should have said that they are given out like driver's licenses......

Anyone that thinks they're handed out like Halloween candy in our little corner here should venture into other forums included in FTE. They do a whole lot of patting on the back for BS topics. I was amazed when I first ventured into the main snake pit.

The points made here are totally valid. Seems we have been stingy here. I too used to wear myself out helping folks here. I logged on every night back when Dan was a Mod to help folks. Look at my post count and my reps. Now look around at other post counts and join dates along with their reps.

I used to read every thread/post. I would never let a ? go unanswered. If I could not answer it, I would give it a bump.

I don't control reps. I do control this terminal though. So if I wanted more reps I guess I would go to Club FTE or wear out the OTs.

Carry on.

Well said Mike, and if I wasn't on rep time out, I would rep you for that.

Haha Barry, I decided I would just rep you instead because you sure deserve it, but I am in the same rep prison you are.
