9" rear end off-center?

Ok - I have been trying to determine if I need to off-set my engine to be inline with my 9" rear end. I've read that it is not needed and then someone posted a link to some guys site saying it did need to be off-set.

I don't think I will have any issues with the steering/etc - going with power steering.

So, I have installed Mustang II IFS and will be installing a 390 in it. I have a Ford 9" 3.5 gearing....

I know the engine needs to be parallel with the frame and the trans angle and pinion angle need to line up.....

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Dave F.

The engine does NOT need to be offset just to match the rearend.
There were alot of rears built that way for clearence issues etc.
Just make sure you set the pinion angle.

Dick told you true... no offset is needed just to keep the c/l in line...

this might help you visualize it..

Cool - Thanks. When I first got the truck it had the engine in there crocked - this is probably why they did that....

That's true with the rear end, however I have read many post where it was necessary to off set the engine a little for the headers, exhaust manifold to clear the powersteering gear box. If you are sure there is no problems there, then as stated, no offset is required.

crooked won't work.... the crankshaft center line and the pinion center line MUST be parallel... they can be offset a reasonable amount (to the limits of the universal joints ) but they have to be parallel... My 460 was offset 2" to the passengers side... but it was parallel with the frame rails and the pinion center line

Keep in mind that Ford offset the 3rd member to allow the needle bearings to rotate. I think Chrysler offset theirs in the up/down direction.

A perfectly centered drivelive is not what they had in mind. There are a lot of illustrations regarding driveshift alignment on the Net.

GM did up and down, chrysler offset the engine. there HAS to be some degree of offset, otherwise the Ujoints will wear out in no time.
