04 SCAB FX4 - I am looking to change the tone of my exhaust. I don't want to go too loud and have a constant drone sound in the cab. I am thinking about a single FM 70 to replace the stock muffler. I've also read about installing dual FM70s for even a nicer tone - anyone done this? Big difference compared to the single FM70?
Also - for towing - exit the pipe in front of the rear wheels correct?
I just had a dual cat-back flowmaster 50 series installed. While the tone is wonderful and very aggressive, it might be a bit on the loud side inside the cab. The flowmaster kit for the 2004 f150 includes a 40 series muffler, and I'm certainly glad I didn't get that.
I would think that a 60 series (especially if you use dual mufflers), would be plenty quiet and the 70 series wouldn't be loud enough.
Well thats what happens when I spout off about something I don't know anything about.... , so maybe the 70 series would be the logical choice. My point is that the 50 series can be fairly loud. When you mash down on the go pedal they bark pretty good. At highway speeds they certainly are louder than stock, but I find the "purr" to be quite nice to listen to. I was thinking incorrectly that the 60's would be somewhere between the 50 and 70 series. Anyway I love my truck. Its the first truck I've ever had ( I must be doing that mid-life crisis thing), I've been driving mini-vans for most my adult life, and I'm enjoying the "a man and his truck" thing.
I've got an older truck, but here's my experience. On my 1998 F-150 4.6L V-8, I simply installed a single Flowmaster 50 Delta Flow muffler in place of the stock.. I get a nice tone when accelerating, but when cruising there's not much difference from stock unless you get over 70, and even then it's not bothersome.
I spoke to a local muffler shop that's pretty reliable. They said that the FM70 is pretty darn quiet and you won't hear much of a diff from stock. They typically install many of the FM50s and people are usually happy with it. They also stated that the version of the FM50 that they install is an SUV version - little bit larger some other FM50s and that drone noise is not very apparent.
I installed a Flowmaster 70 with a single 3" and love it! Sound is nice/not too over the top and the engine seems to take a good step on the gas better. And yes, it is a little better sounding then stock. You can see the comparison at the flowmaster website with OEM and 70 or other series mufflers.
I also have an Airaid intake and the two systems really go well. Increase in resonse and gas mpg's were well worth it!
