I have a early 99' F-250 with a banks power pack that includes the turbo upgrade, computer module, 4' exhaust with muffler and cat, air filter and guages.
The truck for me is for towing and could always use more power and lots of my dodge friends got rid of their stock mufflers to gain some power and tone, will I get any more power if I remove either the cat and or muffler and will it still sound ok or will it sound like a mercruiser out of water? This is my first psd and dont want to cut a factory bolt in setup if its gunna do nothing for me.
Straight pipe it! You'll gain a lb or two of boost, the turbo will whistle more, and spool faster. You might get a little exhaust drone when towing. An easy way to see if you like it is to undo one of the connections in the exhaust and run it for a bit. I disconnected mine right in front of the muffler (no cat) and left it off. Love the sound and the umph that came with it.
You don't need either. They will A. raise your exhaust temps, and B. loose the sound. I just straight piped this weekend (had a 4" with muffler) and i tell you, i wish i had it straight piped from the beginning. I like what Trevor said though. Try it with a muffler/cat and then try it without.

Todd - just make sure you check into your local emissions laws. I live in Colorado, and the skeleton of my kitty is still there, just no guts - to keep the emissions people happy every year when they go pokin around under my truck.
If you're going to straight pipe it, the truck will breathe easier (the less restriction, the more air)...but it can be pretty loud. You'l get to hear your turbo a lot more often.
I took mine out last weekend and love the sound. I here that the used cats are bringing about 30 bucks here. Luckily no emissions testing here since the late 70's early 80's.

She has a way with words!!
I agree, get rid of them both. I never had a kitty under mine, but just changing to a bigger exhaust made a huge difference. I gained approx.4lbs boost and dropped anywhere 50-100 degrees EGT. I screwed up and installed a muff, I will get that out soon.

This is another one that I do not even need to read the rest of the answers to give you the one and only answer. Get rid of both, and if you have the funds 4" turbo back, and you'll never look back.
. . . and the skeleton of my kitty is still there, just no guts -
How hard is it to remove the guts? My 4" system should be here this week, wanted the straight pipe but the muffler was included. I am wondering how much of a PITA to de-gut it?

A lot more of a PITA than just using the muffler delete pipe. Why do you feel like you need a muffler in the first place?

the "kitty" she's referring to is the catalytic converter. Mufflers are nearly impossible to gut. The cat is just a honycomb material that can be hammered out with a stick. You can probably just replace the muffler on your system with a straight lenght of 4" pipe.

Welcome to FTE!
Op, yep, Trevor, thanks for answering that question for me! Internet is going screwy here at work, our DSL went down, and guess who is the backup IT person? *raising hand*

Hey Mark, I didn't necessarily want the muffler but the straight pipe was not included in the exhaust I picked up off eBay.
My exhaust says it has the "hi-flow" muffler, so my new question is how much more restrictive is the "hi-flow" muff than straight pipe? Is it more of a sound thing or what's the straight scoop?
