In NJ, there is a statute in Motor Vehicle law that EXPRESSLY PROHIBITS the placing of ANY item on your vehicle that has not been approved by the NJDOT (NJ Department of Transportation).
EVERY approved motor vehicle product will have a DOT approval number on the product. The way to check the product is to look for the number.
This law covers items such as tint, light blackout covers, mufflers and light lenses (blue dot). The lights must also illuminate at a certain % at a certain amount of feet also.
One other fact that might help you decide whether to attempt to try riding with these items is...the statute MANDATES the violator to make a court appearance (no mail-in payments).
While the DOT number thing is true I never noticed them on a muffler before and if someone is crawling under my truck looking for them then they need to get laid or something because that is a waste of time
My oldest daughter once had a 96 altima w/tint on the front windows and got thru inspection no problem, it was summer time and the windows were down.
But, she did get a 200.00 ticket from a local township police officer.
My other daughter has had tint on her front windows for quite some time now and no problems yet and her windows are so dark, I don't know how she sees at night.
First thing welcome Truckwrench to the NJ Chapter of FTE.
What model truck do you have?
Yes I know the consequences for having the tint, I just feel I'll take the chance as long as I don't do anything stupid to attract attention to myself I should be a OK for a while until some rookie or having a bad day cop decides to stick it to me. So far I've come in contact on numerous occasions that if they wanted to they would have.
We just purchased a used 2005 F150 Supercab 4x2 4.6l V8 from Winners Ford
This replaced an 1989 F150 XLT Lariet 5.0 V8 which now lives in the side yard until I sell it.
Prior to the 89 I had a 88F150 with a manual trans which now belongs to my brother in law.
Back in the early ninetys I had a 1972 F150 4x4 360 V8 with manual steering,
manual trans, manual brakes and a snow plow. This was a real workhorse but I got tired of driving it.
I have 5% tint on all my windows and a 1/4 of the windshield. I have had no problems with being pulled over for it. When i had mine done the guy told me where the cops bother you and I was also thinking of doing my whole windshield and he said "let me put to you this way, do you want a $200 ticket or a $45 ticket." I've had my windows done for about a year and never been stopped, Ive even gone where i know cops are **** and never stopped.
i went ahead and tinted 20% all the way around front/rear winders. good advice on using a private shop. thank god i dont have to go through nj state insp. any more. like the others' have said, i nevergot pulled over for my tint...yet (knock. knock)
