start up smoke

Even in warm weather I get about 3-5 seconds of smoke on start up, always have. It is white with a hint of blue color smoke. The truck runs great, what causes this? I know this has been covered but I can't remember. This only happens when the truck has sat overnight or a long time.

Usually the startup smoke is worn valve seals.

What is the fix for worn valve seals? Is this something I can do myself?

i wouldnt worry about it. a little smoke is fairly normal for the trucks. unless you are freight training it in 90 degree weather its not worth tearing into to find out what exactly is causing it.

yeah, from an economics stand point, (assuming there is a problem) you are going to partialy disassemble a motor with 270k on it to attempt to stop 3 seconds of cold start smoke. if its valve seals you will be tearing into the heads and depending on the shop you took it to they may want to remove them to replace the seals. then you will probably find that the guides are worn too, and with the high miles and the heads off you might as well keep tearing into it to inspect/replace bearings.....and the list would keep compounding. in my opinion its just not worth worrying over. but some people would probably get it fixed, in my case if i start to tear it apart i try not to leave old parts in.
