White Smoke on start up...

When i started my truck this morning, i noticed that white smoke was coming out of the tail pipe. I have started the truck in the cold before and this has never happened. Is this something to be worried about???

Well, did you let the glow plugs warm up? If you did how long did you let them? How cold was it this morning?

A couple of days ago it was 9 degrees when I started my truck. Smoked like a steam engine for about 5 minutes. Happens every time it is very cold.

you may have a glow plug or two not working
Assuming these would be similar to my 5 cyl mercedes,if I lost one GP it was baely noticable just apuff of white smoke. If I lost two it was a little slower to start with more white smoke

Exactly.

I already have 2 glowplugs that are going out on my truck, so I get a bit of extra white smoke on cold starts when temps are below freezing. The engine still fires right up without trouble.

It was about -4 at 4 this morning when i started it. I let the glow plugs stay on til about 10 seconds after the light went out. Started fine and ran fine, just the smoke.

Yup, the colder the outside temps, the more white smoke I have. On real cold mornings, the neighbor's house disappears...

I would let them sit AT LEAST 60 seconds if it's that cold. Your glow plugs can(and will at those temps) stay on for up to 120 seconds.

Oh really??? Good to know. So when the light goes off, don't start it and let it sit longer?

Thank would be correct.

Next time you start your truck Matt, keep a eye on your dash lights. you will notice them get brighter once the glow plugs are done cycling.

That should give you a ideal on how long you can wait before you can start. or you can add a GPR L.E.D
