I had put this in another forum by mistake, but anyway, the cam in my 360 broke into and Im open to suggestions whether to put new cam in or go another direction. Has been suggested to upgrade it to 390. Mite be the best way to go, but suggestions are welcome.
thanks
HH
It's very difficult to change the cam in-truck on the FE engines. Even with everyone saying how much better a 390 is, I am very happy with the 360 in my 72 hauling rig. I can just let the clutch up at idle in first, and walk uphill with a loaded trailer. It's not very good on gas, but I'm hoping to improve that before too long. I do have an S code intake and a Holley 600cfm vacuum secondary carb on it, and will be swapping to electronic ignition in the next couple weeks here.
Thanks.....It difinitely would be less expensive to stay with the 360. The heads and rocker arms and inserts are practically new. I have got some feelers out so will make decisions in couple wks
Thanks
I recently upgraded my 360 to a 390 and what a difference. I did a few upgrades in the process since I had to replace everything anyways. The 360 had thrown a rod and did a lot of internal damage. If you can afford the rebuild your power and torque gains can be significant with the right aftermarket parts and you don't have to compromise gas mileage.
Good question....will find out in day or two. The truck was running great. went about 15 miles from house. About 2 hours later, got in, crank up, sounded good. Oil pressure was good.....Suddenly it starts shutting down...then quit.. So there was no warning. Will begin pulling it apart in few days and hope nothing too serious. The engine is not locked up, in fact it will start, just will not rev up faster than an idle.
Would that cause the cam to break into? The valve cover was removed and the rear rocker arms are not moving.. Of course will know more when I look into the eng.
since I had not long ago put on new heads, lifters, push rods, rocker arms, I decided to just go with a new cam. It was broken as if it was sawed into, but nothing else was damaged and the motor was not locked up. It is running good again and IF something else happens to it, I will go for another engine.
Thanks for advice
I've seen two cams break before. (one was in a small block Chevy, one in a Ford) I couldn't explain either other than faulty cam, poor casting/forging.
It is strange. My friend who has been a pro mechanic for many years said he had only seen 3 or 4 and could not explain it. It did not appear that something else in the engine caused it.
