I pictured Ken vegging to some Brahms, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven......And Sheldon?.......Strictly a 'grunge' man imbibing intoxicating substances to the sounds of bands like Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana......
Well, I also listen to Steve Gordon (Native American themes) and Frank Sinatra... all depends on the mood. And Pink Floyd when I'm winding down....

good video, but it kind of made me feel like those Pepsi commercials...where the guy wants to go back to when he drank Pepsi,or whatever and there he is rocking in his tight pants and going to his business meeting..kind of funny, kind of wierd...I watched the first half of the video and thought to myself"I would much prefer watching Dwight Yoakum in his tighties and cowboy hat!!!
For instance... the Beatle's changed remarkably over their history, becoming a completely different band with a different look, a different sound and a different philosophy... and made tons of money in the process but I can't say they sold out. Part of getting older is you get tired of doing the same thing all the time.
Take for instance, Sammy Hagar joining Van Halen. Some fans say they sold out when that happened. But let's dig deeper and listen to what Sammy said about it years later. He said when he agreed to join Van Halen it would be only if they took the band in a different direction from both his music and the music while David was the front man. Why? Because he didn't want Van Halen to simply be a Sammy Hagar clone nor did he want himself to be David Lee Roth clone. Now, some of Van Halen's fans LOVED how the band evolved. Some didn't (I'm one of them, preferring their harder original sound).
If a band changes and the results are positive they're serving their fans. If they don't change... they become a relic where the only fans showing up are people who are now geezers reminiscing about their younger days.
Now, that's not to say there aren't instances where there aren't true cases of sellouts but if you always play the same stuff it becomes stale after a while.
Look at the Rolling Stones. They've played blues, hard rock, disco, 80s new wave styled songs, etc. Yet, here they are still selling out shows after 45 years together!
I can think of plenty of bands that did sell-out, but I don't think those 3 are the only bands that didn't. There are plenty that didn't sell-out... but they can barely fill a bar much less a concert hall.
Preach on Ken!!! I'd agree with all of that! I dont feel JP sold out, they evolved, they felt something different at that time, and it reflected in there music> I happen to believe some of that era JP will stand up against all the old stuff. I used to just put turbo on repeat for hours. it was good, different but good. that is the misunderstood thing about music, it is an artists expression, and those that are true to themselves could give a darn if the fans get it. selling out would be heading a different direction because that is what they felt, and then bouncing back to the same old if it wasnt a thrill to the fans! heck maybe we could argue that AC/DC are sellouts, they have never made an album that didnt sound like all the others!!!!! I dont think they are, but the argument could be made! Dan
"Johnny B. Goodes" used to be a famous pizza shop in Alameda California that had front clips of cars from the fifties mounted on the walls. Next to it was a lot full of restored fifties cars.
When you tipped the bartender the headlights of all the front clips flashed and the horns honked.
Many of the boothes were made out of cut up cars and their seats.
I had many a beer there before it went away.
They had awesome pizza....
It was a goal of every crew that was about to go to sea from Alameda Naval Air Station to go there first and see all of the cars, wolf down some melted cheese and pepperoni, and whatever happened next go to sea happy....
Sadly - it is no longer there.
I was told the entire bar top was a single piece of polished redwood, forty feet long. It had been there for decades.
JP definitely sold out. The "Metal" that they played in the mid to late 80s wasn't near as heavy as what they did earlier in their career. Also, look at the cheesy outfits and har dos they had in that ara. All of it was aimed at MTV and middle of the road rockers. You cannot tell me that "Parental Guidance" is the same type of metal as "Grinder".
Metallica also sold out when they became corporate bitches and sued their own fans.
