You should be just fine.... We came out of a 7.3L after 6 years into a 05 V10...and we are camping right now...and i am more impressed every time we take this 5th wheel out...Our 5th wheel is 36 feet wildcat.. The truck you have in your sights sounds like a winner.
diesel are built to tow. he wants something for tow, so I told him buy a diesel. their great reliable power.
It's not after midnight so I guess it's safe and I just can't resist...
So if the diesel is built for towing what is the V10 built for? Oh wait they are only good for using your truck to get groceries. Maybe a Sunday drive? God forbid you (gasp) tow with it! I mean how can a gas motor tow something! Man to think what would happen if the truck had a 5.4L gas engine! I bet you would have to make sure you're going down hill all the time. Man that thing couldn't even get out of it's own way!
Oh and spark plugs! Don't get me started on that. How can a "real" truck have spark plugs? I mean really how could you produce any kind of power with fuel, air and a spark? With all the sparking going on I bet that engines wouldn't even get 10,000 miles before they fell apart!
Since your'e on the subject. I got a question.
My 2000 F-250 Crew Cab V-10 Automatic came with 4:30 gears. Since then I have installed a eight inch lift and 38inch tires. I have changed the gears to 4:88 but think I should have gone lower for towing.
What gear ratio would you guys recommend?
I plain on towing my Bronco.
4.88s with 38" tires is about equivalent to 4.10s with stock tires. You could have gone one step lower, but it would probably hurt your highway mileage. Honestly if you do much towing maybe 38s weren't the way to go?

Some quick calculations show that you would need to be at 5.13 to be at stock tires with 4.30. With 4.88 your in the ball park so it's probably not worth changing over to 5.13.
You must have one heck of a drop hitch with 8 inch lift with 38's!
I have had all the diesels at one time or another over the last 10 years. Yes they tow well, but they also gave me alot of trouble, Ford 6.0 need i say more, dodge cumminns great motor truck fell apart, chevy duramax/allison, good truck, but had fuel rail sensor problem twice and egr problems twice, each time i was stranded.
So i am willing to give up a little less power for a truck that will still run great for 300,000 miles without any issues, plus i dont think i am giving up much with the 2008 V10/4:30 gears, she pulls like a champ and i tow heavy for work 5 days a week.
I am not knocking the diesels, if you get one that dont have any issues like the 7.3 ford, then your lucky, i just had no luck and i am done paying a big premium for a diesel and then being dissapointed again.I will keep my gasser.

I never said v10 weren't capable, just that diesels are prefered. plain and simple.

Prefered by who and why? You because you want one? That's fine if so. Each their own and I won't knock that but list ONE reason that buying a sweet deal 2005 V10 is a bad idea for towing a 38' toyhauler?
What the hell did we all tow with before diesel pick-up's were available to the public? We have only had these powerfull diesels the past 10 or 12 years. Before that you had Non Turbo no power rattle boxes....Gassers have been towing since the truck was invented !!
