my 83 f-100 is runnin between half (m in normal) to 3/4 (a or L in normall) insted of on the n or o like it used to. i used a hand held heat gauge it said the rad was at 125 degrees one side and 170 on the other new fluid and temp gauge still the same it scares me but seems to run great imao not the head gasket thats for sure any ideas?
You need to install an aftermarket mechanical gauge. The factory gauge is more of a go\no-go deal and it can't be used to diagnose overheating problems because it's too subjective. "Close to the L" is not a scientific measurement.
Also, an IR gun can't be used to diagnose overheating problems either. They read the surface temperature of the target, not the internal temperature. The temperature of the radiator, or even the coolant in the radiator, is not the temperature of the coolant circulating in the engine block.
I will say it again - you cannot characterize your overheating issues with the tools you are using. A mechanical gauge that threads into the block is your only option.
