Temp Gauge

Hi,
as I am approaching finishing getting my truck ready for a road worthy.
My attention comes back to the temp gauge that I have noticed in the past never gets to the half way mark. I am cautious as offcourse as I don't want to damage the engine by over heating.

I remember with the petrol gauge I pulled a wire off and grounded it which proved the meter was ok as it indicated full scale.

How do you guys find your temp gauge indicates under normal use?

Thanks,

You can ground the temp sender wire and do the same test as you did with the fuel sender. It should swing to full hot with the wire grounded.

I prefer to run an aftermarket mechanical gauge pack alongside my stock gauges so I can keep an eye on things. The originals may not be so accurate

My '79 with 300ci temp guage sits dead center in the 'normal' range, while my mechanical guage shows 180 degrees

There's all kinds of different brands and options, sunpros being on the cheaper end Autometer being more expensive.

I use Equus gauges, they're relatively cheap, readily available, and I've never had an issue with one.

The stock temp gauge is Kentucky windage at best. Where it reads is where it reads and it's all relative.

Install a quality graduated analog gauge as recommended above.
