I am new to this site so please bear with me. I have a 1997 Ford F-250 7.3 turbo. Here it is in short order.... Started running real rough and noticed it was low on oil so I filled it up and it started running good. I drove the truck on a short trip and it did fine until about 150 miles into it and it started doing it again. Checkd oil level and it was fine so I limped it home. I suspect it is something to do with oil pressure do to the fact that I chnged it and it ran fine for awhile but I changed it again but didnt produce as it did the first time. I have changed I.C.P, IPR, low pressure oil pump and checked for loose or bad connections under valve covers. Also changed the fuel pump. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thanks....
Welcome to FTE. We do have a section that is more specific to your truck. You can also check with those guys. You have to scroll down the forum listing well past the super duty section to find it. Here's a shortcut for you 1994.5 - 1997 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums
Sounds like you've spent a lot of money throwing parts at it so far. Have you had the truck on a scanner that can monitor live data, or considered buying your own scanner? The cheapest place to get one is AutoEnginuity PC Scan Tool (USB). You could also post your location (city, state) here, in the 94-97 section, and maybe the 99-03 section and see if one of the members who has one lives close by.
Just to rule out the simple things, are the air and fuel filter in good condition? What kind of oil are you using? Can you give a better description of running rough? Any smoke out the tailpipe when it's acting up? If so, what color? Any noises associated with the running rough? Do you have a chip/tuner in the truck?
Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to get a better feel for what's going on. If you've run through everything, it sounds like the next step will be to check the oil pressure in each head to confirm or disprove your HPOP theory.
Sorry but seem to have lost my first thread on this subject. Anyway i have since checke the oil level and it is good. I also started it and let run(really rough barely ran) and unplugged both injector harness from passenger side head and it ade no difference whatsoever. Does this mean that I have bad injectors on that side? Maybe computer problem? I am still leaningtowards a pressure problem like maybe injector oil leaks? I really appreciate the help so far...
Can you get an Auto Enginuity on it? That'll tell you what kinda pressure the HPOP is putting out. I'm pretty sure that the HPOP goes out gradually though- mine is only pushng 1600 psi, not the almost 3000 it should be pushing, but I still run well enough.
A bad injector (solenoid) can cause the IDM to shut down the entire bank. Getting the truck on a scanner will tell you which injector the problem is, assuming it's not a loose plug under the valve cover or a bad IDM.
I just recently went through this with an 02 at work. If you're not familiar with changing injectors, read up on it first. You don't want to try and start your motor with a bunch of oil in the cylinder.
I havent checked for loose connectors under that side yet. It sure seems it would be a pressure problem. aAnyway do you think its time to take it to a shop?. I sure hate to but I have never been this stumped before. And yes all filters are new and fuel filter reg screen was cleaned as well(had some black debri in the screen? I will check on the connectors under right bank valve cover but was wondering is there any risk of shock if I decide to a wire wiggle check while engine is running? Thanks alot for all you guys help. I will keep you posted...
So you said you unplugged both valve cover connectors on passenger bank and it made no difference in how it ran? That points me toward either a wiring issue between the IDM and the valve cover or a bad IDM (which could be cause by a wiring issue under the valve cover). There are wiring diagrams for you that can be found in my Webshots by clicking the pics or the link my signature
