i have a 94 powerstroke, the oil pressure guage was reading reallly low, all the time, so i replaced the sending unit an it read normal.. then recently it started falling down to the low side of the braket, i changed the oil, it fixed it for a few days, now is running low.. do you guys think its the hpop? or the low end oil pump? im still drivin it now, but im a lil worried bout my oil pressure.. any ideas??
I personally cant say which one, but Ive always had the bad luck that something got past a oil filter due to who ever I got the truck from not changing the oil often enough and either started plugging up the oil tubes or the pickup tube in the oil pan. Or the wrong grade of oil (too thin). Hopefully somebody can tell you its something easier or cheaper to fix.
If your talking about the stock gauge, its junk. If you have six pounds of pressure, its activited, that's all it does. There is no low and high, its just off or on.
alright thanks,, when i got the truck, it had a fram filter on it. yuck. the guy said it had been 2 years and around 10 thousand since its last oil change, i got a really good deal on the truck thats why i have it
If you do have oil pressure issues (low pressure) it will be the LPOP (engine oil pump). This is the only oil pressure conntected to your gauge. But as stated above the only real way to find out is to install a good after market oil pressure gauge.
yeah i would say hook up a oil pressure guage. mine wasnt woking when i got it than on the way home i some of these huge ohio potholes and it read normal.lol

Plo, so if you install an after market gauge, yo only read LPOP, right?, what are the normal pressures there and where do you connect the sender? And to read the HPOP you have to connect another gauge to the ports in the rail? and what are the normal pressures there too?
Im a little confused, and Im going to buy a liquid gauge to messure the HPOP, so I want to know its high range: 5000 or 6000 psi?
LPOP you can connect to the 1/8" npt plug near the oil filter. I have heard you can also get it from the HPOP reservoir where the stock sender is located.
LPOP pressure is usually between 40 and 60 psi.
I am not positive on the HPOP but I believe they run between 2800 and 3200 psi.

Yes, most people are just trying to replace the factory oil pressure gauge that reads engine oil pressure (LPOP)
what are the normal pressures there and where do you connect the sender?
Normal pressures (depending on wear and tear on the engine, and other factors) minimum 6 psi up to around 70-80 max psi (new engine). The factory oil pressure sending unit is located on the top right (passenger) side of the HPOP reservoir. You can install a "T" fitting and locate it here or install it in the side of the oil filter housing, there is a plug installed there that you can remove and install the new gauge sender or tubing.
And to read the HPOP you have to connect another gauge to the ports in the rail?
Yes, or put it inline (with a "T") in the high pressure oil line
and what are the normal pressures there too?
2500 to 3200 psi (normally)

My manual says to use a 5,000 psi gauge.
Thanks.
If I've miss quoted any pressures someone will correct me. Be careful working with the HPOP system, that much pressure can kill, blind or mame you if a leak develops.

Reason: adition
FWIW a LPOP gauge is not very useful on these engines. I did install one once out of curiosity...then removed it after I realized the engine will stop running if the LPOP stops supplying oil pressure without causing engine damage. With our HEUI style injectors...it's like having a low oil pressure cut-off switch.

Ok, thank you AMIGOS for the info, and also to Jim for his comment.

That makes me feel better... I have a slight rod knock( atleast I think so ) and am i was affraid I'm not getting enough pressure to keep the top end lubercated correctly. But this makes me much more confident in this...
A LPOP pressure gauge is like any other gauge, it lets you monitor the health of your engine so that you can (hopefully) prevent major damage. Granted the engine will not run if the LPOP is not operational. If you start having consistantly low oil pressure (say 10 psi at 2500 rpm) this tells you that you have an issue, (worn main bearings, clogged or leaking pickup tube, etc.) an lets you know that you need to start checking into things as apossed to no gauge and the engine stops running due to a problem with the LPOP that went unnoticed until it caused an engine shut down. Just my 2 cents.
