Bad fuel selector valve

This information is for a gas engine and not a diesel.
The fuel tank selector valve on the 89 is mechanical. The pressure from the in tank pumps is what switches the selector valve.
There are 4 fuel lines at the back of the selector valve. The two larger diameter lines are the supply. One from each tank. The two smaller lines are the return lines. One for each tank.
Be careful if you mess with the fuel lines. Don't use an incandescent work light. The heat generated by the bulb could ignite the gas. Use a fluorescent work light.
If you remove the two larger lines and place them in a bucket. Turn the ignition on. The selected in tank pump should run for 2 seconds and you should see fuel coming from the larger hose.
One of the in tank pumps is bad or the selector valve is bad.
Here's a pic. of the tank selector valve which is a dealer item and sells for around $72.00

Are you sure you're hearing the in tank pump run and not the frame rail mounted pump?
Because the valve is switched by the pressure from the in tank pump you need to compare the fuel flow from each pump. Just because you can hear the in tank pump run doesn't mean it's actually pumping the proper volume of fuel. For example the pump could have a clogged sock filter which attaches to the fuel pump pickup.

Ed (FTEpartsguy) just contacted me and said HUH??
MY MISTAKE...SORRY....THE CORRECT PART NUMBER IS F1UZ9B263B.
The MSRP & Ed's price are correct.
E7TZ9B263A = replaced by FOUZ9B263A = replaced by F1UZ9B263B
MSRP: $135.00 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $72.90
After that error...I suggest you get the part number for your 88 from Ed.

There may gas leakage and I hope the fuel tanks are not full or there will be a lot and may not stop running.
