Not really sure if I am checking the oil amount properly in my superduty.
It is an E40D transmission. Do I check it with the engine running in park or neutral or do I just leave the engine off and check. I notice on the dipstick there is a hot and cold place for the oil level.
I believe I should check it in park with the engine running, but I want to make sure and I cannot find anything in the manual to indicate the proper procedure.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Don't use the cold mark. It's not at all accurate. Always check the trans fluid with the trans warmed up and the engine idling in park or neutral. Park is better, you don't have the chase the truck down the street!
You shoudl shift thru all gears and then go to neutral or park with engine running.
Must be on level ground.
If cold do it as soon as you can get to the dipstick, don't let it sit in the driveway for several minutes.
If warm, don't do it after you have driven around for a long time. I think the manual says to run at normal speeds for no more than ten minutes and then check fluid.
Doesn't hurt to check every once in awhile just to be sure.
