My truck (00 V10 F250 XL) is currently buzzing during a morning cold start. It will buzz for a minuite or two until it warms up. Then goes away.
I had my wife cold start the truck while I check for where the buzzing is coming from. Sound like the buzzing is coming from somewhere inside the exhaust system near the muffler. Ear directly directly on the muffler (while it is still cold) and the buzzing is pretty intense.
Wondering if anyone ever had a similar issue. What could be causing it?
You need to find out if the buzzing is in fact in the muffler or upstream from the muffler, like in the catalytic converter. This is pretty easy to do using a stethescope. If you can't get one, use a large screwdriver. Place your ear on the handle and the tip on the part you want to hear.
A length of garden hose will also work.
It sounds as if something in your exhaust is deteriorating and making a buzzing sound, until it gets warm, expands and fits correctly. It could be the muffler, catalytic converter or even in the exhaust tubing, Y-pipe or exhaust manifold (like an EGR valve).
I had a preconverter in a mid 90's Ford come apart and clog the catalytic converter with a ceramic looking material. The exhaust note would take on a sound that ranged from an odd buzz to a nasal drone.
I suspect that sound is just your muffler getting old, but that's just a guess.
The exhaust note is perfectly fine. No odd buzz or No nasal drone. Just the metal to metal buzzing sound coming somewhere real real near the muffler (if not directly from the muffler).
Let me also add. That this only happens when it is cold and when in gear (R or D) while feet on brake. The buzzing is caused by the vibration of the motor being under load when cold.
If left in idle even when cold there is no buzzing. To isolate the human error of pressing the brake. The e-brake was engaged. No difference.
Vehicle drive smooth and no loss of power. Just an annoy metal buzzing at cold start.
Maybe you need to dig into this further to isolate the problem. The fast that it only does it while in gear with your foot on the brake may indicate the problem is in your transmission, not your muffler.

During a cold start. If left in park and idling. It will still buzz when ever the engine changes warm up RPM.
So definitely not the tranny. Foot on the break while in gear is to help stimulate the effect. Foot on the break cause the engine to be under load and cause the engine to vibrate more. Simply a catalyst method to trigger the buzzing to help pin point it.
Sounds like the baffles in the muffler came loose.
So far one mechanic say that is the problem - loose baffle.
I will seek another opinion.
If that is the culprit. I will try to live with it.
If it starts annoying me - I will swap out the muffler. Know anyone that needs a good working muffler that just loves to sing in the morning - I meant buzzz.
