1990 Bronco 5.8l e40d trans
I am levaing ignition off, connecting a tester to both connectors . Then move the throttle.
When I connect tester to both it show continuity.
I checked voltage and ohms, but not sure what to look for
Is there something wrong here?
Thanks in advance
if this sensor is bad the results will be fast idle like the throttle has a mind of its own
my 93 f150 w/ 302 tps whent bad and it idled at about 2ooo rpms it was hell when i had to put it in gear .as fare as testing it i am not sure.
athough i would just replace it they are under 50 bucks

1. check the voltage with the harness connected and the key on, should vary smoothly from around 1V to 5V as the throttle is moved from idle to WOT. If 5V always, move a lead to the other wire. If the voltage is negative, that's okay, just the voltmeter leads are backwards, no problem. Any jumping around of the reading, particularly just off idle or at idle, the TPS needs to be replaced.
2. check resistance with the harness disconnected. The TPS will read around 4Kohms top to bottom. Checking from the wiper to one side, the resistance should vary from around 800 ohms to full value from idle to WOT. Again, the reading should smoothly increase (or decrease, as the case may be)
The TPS is a potentiometer that nearly always wears at the just-off-idle point. It gets erratic, the CPU interprets that erratic TPS voltage as throttle movement, and the motor stumbles or skips.
I've had to replace the TPS at 100,000 miles or 7 years (more or less) on most every EEC Ford I've ever owned.
Good luck
Mike
