Floor Paint/Covering

I'm just about finished replacing the cab mounts/floor pans in my '76. Cut out the rust, so everything that's exposed on the floorboards is either a new panel, or unrusted original steel.

Wondering what I should coat the floor with to help prevent rust in the future. I don't have much interest in paying the high price for POR 15 or Rust Bullet, but would like something that will help protect the floor. I have a rubber mat from a '75 that I'm going to use to cover the floor instead of carpet. Not sure if I'm going to do anything in the way of floor insulation -- any recommendations on that front? Would just want something cheap and durable.

Thanks.

I have ripped out my rubber mat and put down roll on bedliner material on the inside. It's a little quiter then just the rubber mat. I am also going to do the bottom of the cab at some point, along with the back of the cab behind the seat for some add'l sound deadoning.

As far as price, I paid around $80 for a setup for the bedliner material and I have about 1/2 gallon left. I put 3 coats on the floor.

If I had gone to the trouble of repair the floor and mounts with new metal, I'd sure want some good paint to prevent more rust. You may want to check into Chassis Saver Paint. It's fairly cheap compared to other products and I am pretty impressed with the durability of it. The paint can be brushed on and easy to apply.

I can't say what will work for you, so I'll tell you what I plan.

Rustoleum with ceramic spheres. See Ceramic insulation - Crankshaft Coalition Wiki for details.

Basically, it would end up the same as Lizard Skin (which they've determined is basically latex house paint with the ceramic spheres), but the Rustoleum would have a harder finish that would be more durable. It will provide thermal and sound protection/dampening. On the plus side, Rusto with the ceramic could be put on the underside of the cab as well, followed by an undercoat if you wish. You would want to put a few coats of Rusto over rusto/sphere mix, to make sure none of the microbeads are visible (so that they don't get loose and in your lungs, or broken).

Plus, it's rusto. It stops rust.

After mulling it over a bit, I'm leaning towards using the Herculiner bed liner material for the floor of my cab. Appears that it can be had for about $70 after rebate for the kit and seems to work well for interior applications. I would be reluctant to use it on the bed since it would see too much abuse, but the floorboards seem to be a good application.

Has anyone here used the Herculiner for a floor coating? My thought now is to apply three coats of the Herculiner and then put some good rubber floor mats in and call it good. Should be pretty low maintenance and minimize the risk of getting moisture underneath the larger rubber mat, in the insulation, etc.

I used Dupli color bed liner stuff on the interior, and I have used Herculiner on the floor of my flat bed trailer. Both are very similar type systems. At this point I can't tell you if one is better then the other. The biggest thing is prep. On my trailer I put it down over a wood deck. It held just fine except where I got lazy and didn't prep the wood correctly. So I peeled off what was coming off, re-preped the areas and put it back down and it has held up now for 3 years.
