Did my 3 times top end oil change this morning- First hpop evacuation the oil was pretty nasty. Times 2 & 3 not so bad. -Anybody done this and tried the pro-long additive per you-tube? Just curious if it made any noticable difference. I didnt use the additive.
I think the general consensus here is not to put additives in the oil. Most, if not all, oil additives are designed to be used with a standard low pressure oil system. Our HPOP is hard on oil, and an additive might increase the chance of oil aeration, which wouldn't help the injectors any.
I just changed my oil on Sat and had a 2 quart bottle of Diesel Kleen oil extender(gold bottle) my brother picked up at Wally World for a buck, wow. Don't know if its the fresh oil or the extended mileage oil treatment but the truck runs quieter. Figured i,d try it, can't beat a buck for 2 quarts, think they had a big shipment and were trying to get rid of it. Told him to get more if he can..

Humm, interesting, didn't know DK had that. I know I put it in my fuel, but not in the oil.

There is absolutely no reason at all to follow that video and evacuate the oil out of the HPOP. Sorry to say, but it's a waste of time.
I still got the bottle out in the driveway Rick filled with the old oil. Comes in a gold bottle and says i think(didn't go out to look) extended oil lube or something of the sort. If you want, i'll post a pic tomorrow for yaa. Was listed on the bottle from wal-mart for 18.00 then 8.88 to a dollar, hum...
Curtis - Tell me your reasoning please. I took it that this was a deadhead & this oil was as original from the video. I dont know for sure but it looked impressive and I figured it only cost 3 qts, of oil.

Because it's not really a dead head. It's a flow thru design. The oil in the HPOP reservoir goes through the HPOP, through the HP lines, into the oil rails integral to the head, and then into and out of the injectors, dumping back down into the pan.
I don't know the volume of oil that the injectors discharge, or what the turnover rate in the HPOP is, but I know with 258k on the odometer, and 3k on the oil, my HPOP oil looked like the dirty engine oil I drain out of the pan at 5k. The dipstick did have cleaner oil on it, and I can see the possibility of the factory design leaving some undisturbed oil down low in the HPOP reservoir, but the screen internal to the HPOP will prevent you from sucking that oil out anyway.
I should have an OA from the HPOP back from Blackstone in a week or two that should put this question to rest, but I expect it to tell us the same thing Curtis is saying.

If you think the oil in the HPOP reservoir is dirtier than what is on the dipstick, try this: dip the dipstick in the HPOP reservoir and then compare. Dipsticks tend to make oil look more translucent. They are an excellent tool for judging the amount of oil in the crankcase, but not so good for judging it's relative cleanliness.

Thats cool Mike, I don't think I will add anything to my oil.

I have to disagree with Curtis here based on my own observations. Not saying you need to do it every time, but mine was nasty when I did my injector swap. I say there is something to this.

The oil in the reservoir is the same as the oil in the pan. If the oil in the reservoir was nasty so was the oil in the pan. Where do you think the oil goes after in leaves the oil spouts on the injectors or the IPR? Back to the pan! And how does that oil get to the reservoir? The same low pressure pump that lubes the rest of the engine. I cant believe you guys are buying that "top oil' "bottom oil" BS.

You have got to tell us more then what you just said. Give more evidence or proof of what you are saying. We need to settle this once and for all.
