I started with a Voyager, moved up to an Ultimate 2020, and now have a Brakesmart. Could have saved money, time and aggravation had I just gone with the Brakesmart to start with.
The BrakeSmart is a top of the line controller and very good. It taps into the master cylinder and works with hydraulic pressure.
If you go with an accelerometer based controller then the Prodigy P3 is the choice of most and performs very well. For a 5000# trailer it would be great.
I'll be third to this party and sound like a broken record...
The brakesmart will give you the smoothest of all stops but comes with a hefty price tag.
For 5000# trailer...the Prodigy (~$100) or P3 (~$140) will do just fine...I tow a 9000# TT and have logged over 17,000 miles in the last 3 summers with a Prodigy...if I were in the market today...and had the money...I'd go Brakesmart...if I needed to save a little money and only sacrifice slow speed (i.e. in campgrounds or local streets) stopping smoothness...I'd go P3 for a ~$140 vs the Brakesmart ~$400
The Brakesmart is a little more difficult to install as you have to tap into the master cylinder and fish a cable thru the fire wall...not hard but more difficult. The P3 is a true plug and play install...
