5/16" is smaller than 1/2"

You are forgetting that Cali has the most restrictive emission laws on the planet. I would agree with your statement, but where I live there is no annual testing for emissions. once you register it you dont test ever again. alas, al those people that live in the flat lands. not to brag, but we will have it sooner than later. and that will prob generate a lot of car & truck that wont pass. The California Legislature is again shuffling the cards on older vehicles in regard to emissions testing. After passing a rolling 30 year SMOG exemption in the late 90’s, that bill was amended to freeze the exemption to 1976 and older cars. Now, the new plan is to lift the exemption on all years and require emissions on vehicles produced as far back as 1889.This truly demonstrates how much the Californian Soviet Socialist Republic is a de facto Communist country and not actually part of the United States.

This is why I have seriously though about installing a modern engine & trans in my Highboy.

Im looking for some interor parts and a good grill shell. Did any of those trucks have a good blue dash pad and a 77 and back grill shell? I live in Visalia.
Also where did you hear that they were going to roll back the excemption law? Their was a law that they tried to pass just for the SJ valley but it was amended and left the exception in place.
Thanks Leadmic

I know I need to find one with a torx or allen head for the final bolt near the driver's side up front due to the captive nut on the frame, but I think I have a source for that as well.

I'll try to let you guys know how it goes.
When I repaired my 76 box the last time ,I replaced the carriage bolts with torx type & clips from an 88 ranger ,,,all the work is done from the top...

As far as the grade goes, even grade 5 would be overkill. I'd be more concerned about the fit than the grade. You could lift the whole truck off the ground with a couple of 1/2" grade 5 bolts.

THe grade 8 would really be a waste of money IMHO. The sheet metal they hold down will rip long before you would break a grade 5 bolt.
On my 77 I took some 1/2 inch carriage bolts and stuck a 3/4 washer under the heads. The factory are 1/2 inch threads with the head the same size as a 3/4 carriage bolt has.
