Anyone used one of those before? I just got in my tailgate weld in, roll pan and tailgate handle relocation kit but the tailgate weld in doesnt seem to fit. Im wondering if someone I got the wrong one. i got part 120325 for the 71 truck im working on. Ill try to snap a pic of it later tonight but my nice camera is a few states away with my wife right now.
Thanks for the help.
this is the tailgate im working with
oh i also noticed the roll pan doesnt fit up. It looks like i am going to have to trim a bit to get it flush with the fenders. I havent read the instructions on it yet but is this common? i have the roll pan with the tag insert and it seems like that is whats hitting.
First you might check your instructions on the weld in and the rear pan, and then if you are still having trouble, email me or post some pictures.
Instructions for the weld in say, "This tailgate cover fits over the lower indented part of the tailgate to provide a smooth appearance. It
must be welded at the top edge and sides. The top edge seam must be ground, filled, and smoothed to blend with the original tailgate contours." It then goes on to give more detailed installation info.
If you didn't receive a copy or can't find them, there is a link on our website: http://www.mar-k.com/Ford_64-86_Styleside_TG_weldin.pdf
As for the rear pan, those instructions say, "The rear pan fits between the bed sides below the tailgate. It is formed to match the curve of the bed
sides so that when installed it fills the open area under the tailgate by carrying the original body lines
across the rear of the box." It also adds: "If installing a pan with a license box, the center part of the
rear sill may have to be hammered forward slightly to clear the license box. Hold the rear pan in position to make sure it fits." It then has more detailed instructions as well.
Both of these have diagrams on them also.
Again, you want to read the instructions completely before starting any work. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.
yes the rear sill will need to be notched to get the pan to fit. I also had to hit the reinforcement area of the rear sill with a slege to bend it slightly to get a precise fit. I let a body man weld in my filler pannel because I did not have acess to the proper tools at the time. Look in my gellery for pictures.
thanks for the responses. I will definitely look over the paper work before doing anything and I actually checked the website for the instructions but the pictures wouldnt load(problem on my end not on the site). Im going to go and take some pics right now but the camera i have on hand is not very good. I also looked at the mar-k site for customer trucks but none with the same bed came up.
everything lines up great if i cut the roll at the top, i just wanted to be sure about this before doing so since its such a nice piece and a nice roll at the top. The instructions did state to grind the top edge but i didnt see any mention of cutting.
The curved part actually goes at the bottom of the tailgate. It should fit from the very bottom of the tailgate to the top of the indented area. This is stated in the web site description but not in the instructions. Here is the link to that page on the website: Item Details
Here is the picture: You can see the curve at the bottom you are talking about:
Thank you for pointing out that we need to add that information to our instructions. We try to make improvements to these instructions each time these kinds of questions come up.
thanks! i cant believe i didnt try it that way! I looked at the other pictures of different weld ins and for some reason though they all went over the top Once i pull it off the truck ill be able to slide it around the bottom.
Thanks again! i feel like an idiot Im going to work on it today so hopefully i get some progress pics up later.
No problem - glad to help!
Can't wait to see your pictures when it's done. Also, we have a section on our website where we post pictures of customers' trucks. We'd love to post some pictures of your project so other people researching can see how it's done!
You can email them to us at webmaster@mar-k.com.
ill be sure to post some pics of the back end of the truck when the roll pan and tail gate are done. this tailgate was tweeked pretty bad so im trying to get it back into shape. Ive also removed all the trim and deleted the marker lights(like the 67s had).
mar-ktech. im having some issues with the roll pan and i cant seem to find any instructions that came with the roll pan. I have notched the sill for clearance on the tag box but even when i put the bolt flange up to the truck, the pan sits back a little farther than the body lines. i dont have the tail gate on, im just going by the back corners of the fenders. i know i can get it to line up perfect by modifying the piece a little but again i probably just over looked something simple,
We don't have a copy of those instructions online, but if you will email me at webmaster@mar-k.com, I'll send you a copy. Hopefully the diagram will help you, but if not, post a pic or PM me. You can also email me directly.
