I fabbed up the same type of cover back in the early 90's, don't think it was available pre made then. I found a shop with a wide enough sheet metal brake and left my tailgate with them, and a week later I had the same piece! I made a box for the license plate in the left side of the cover. Reguarding the handle relocation kit, you don't really need it. I just took the original handle assembly and flipped it upside down, installing it in the same location as the premade one here. It hinges from the side, as you probably know, but works fine upside down.
he old handle on the truck needed to be replaced anyways so getting the relocation setup was easier. It has a sheet metal mounting plate that has been formed to the inside of the tailgate. I considered re-using the stock one but the fit and finish of this piece makes for a clean install
well i havent updated this in awhile because the truck is still at the paint shop! I told them it wasnt a rush and he said it would be about 3 weeks if nothing else came up. 3months ago. Its okay though. The bed is in for paint right now and the cab is painted(still needs to be color sanded), so hopefully ill have some pics of the whole thing soon. Here are some i shot today.
got some more pics today. bed is on but not bolted in. still need to color sand the whole thing. and i found a small dent on the tailgate but the paintjob isnt for a show truck and for the work they did on it id say the price was very good. ps the white vertical streaks in some of the pictures are rain, it was raining pretty good when i was snapping the pictures.
Looks great!!! I like the filled seams and gate/rollpan work. Wish I could make similar progress on mine, but alas it is over 4000 miles away right now.
First off great looking truck. I have to say thanks for the visual since I decided long ago that I was going to weld all my seams like you did and plan on modding the tailgate and installing the roll pan like you did, these pics just make me want to do it faster.
another week or so and it will be time to order the drop beams and shackles! then it will start to look mean. I am really liking the filled seams. I think my cousin was on the fence about it and let me make the decision. The seam on the cab is filled as well. At least you have a 67 so the marker light delete isnt an issue for you. Thankfully we had a spare truck and needed some bumpside to patch some nasty dents and it worked out perfectly.
1fordnatic, yes its black. The grille, hood trim on the front edge just above the grill and the bumper are getting painted body color on monday. The rims will be black torque thrust 2's with a polished lip. I wont know what sizes until i drop it and measure a few things but its looking like 20s in the back and somewhere between 17-19s in the front. The door handles and mirrors and antenna will still be chrome and we have a billet insert for the grill. should be stealth!
Shift1313 your truck looks great, I like how the rear pan looks, that's something I would like to do. Do you know if you can add tailights to the pan, and which teilights.
Thanks Shift1313! Great pics and the rear roll pan looks great. If you don't mind, I would love to add a few of these to our site. If you can PM me your name/address I'll send you a permission slip.
As for the taillights, we used to sell the Billet Specialties Taillights for these pans. They are approx 2" X 6" rectangle taillights. You can buy them from Billet Specialties. However, you can use any taillights you want, as long as you buy the rear pan without louvres.
nope, stock tail lights, but the trim around them and all the holes have been filled and smoothed. They actually look really good. If you wanted to take it a step further you could mount them flush and finish the edges a bit but i think it looks good.
