Use Mercon V it's the replacement for Mercon. Or if you wanna stay with Royal Purple then use there Max ATF

LUBE REPORT: Ford Pulls the Plug on Mercon

Royal Purple Transmission Fluid

You can do it that way but you went get all the fluid out. There will still be some in the coolers, the lines, pump, valve body and the internal passages. And you may not be able to drain the torque convertor. If your TC is original it should have a drain plug but a lot of the replacement or aftermarket ones don't.

20 qts and the procedure is the best way to make sure it's all changed.
The procedure doesn't seem to include dropping the pan and changing the filter.

Yes it does. You just gotta read the whole thing:

Now that we understand the basic procedure, let's muddy the water with the options:

Optional: Change the tranny filter. Revise paragraph 2 above to read:

2. Drain the pan, remove the pan, replace the tranny filter, install the pan, then replace and tighten the drain plug.

I've done this type of procedure on my wife's Volvo but the difference was you just disconnect the tranny line at the front of the engine where it went into the cooling area.
I have an aftermarket tranny cooler (big) so could I just disconnect the tranny line that is bringing tranny fluid into the cooler and do the procedure this way?
On the Volvo you just start the engine and it will pump fluid out the tranny line that is bringing fluid to the cooler, I simply pumped out 3 qts. at a time and then refilled with 3 qts. and kept doing this until the fluid was clean/new.

Well.......yea you could do it that way. But why would you want to? You'll just end up with old and dirty fluid in both coolers. It's just as easy to disconnect the return line and pump it from there.

What do you mean by "both coolers"?

I just thought if I did it the way I explained I wouldn't have to get up under the truck and I'd only have to disconnect right at the top of the cooler.

There are two coolers in series.

You're going to have to get up under the truck anyhow. How else are you gonna drop the pan and change the filter.

While you're under there take a look on the right side of the transmission case and you'll see two hardlines just above the pan. Follow the one towards the front. It goes thru the cooler thats built into the bottom of the radiator and then up thru the aftermarket cooler you have installed, from there it returns back to the pan thru the other hardline. If you pump it from the return line (the rearmost fitting) you will exchange the fluid in both coolers.

Mine just runs straight to my aftermarket big cooler cause I've by-passed the one at the bottom of the radiator. This tranny is only about 35K miles old so I've decided I don't need to change the tranny filter and I'm not going to drop the pan.

All this is going to have to wait anyway cause I just went out and checked the differential and it's leaking!!!!! I haven't even put the gear oil in yet!! I thought I cleaned the cover well and both mating surfaces but I guess I didn't do it good enough. I applied the silicone and put the cover on, installed all the bolts hand tight and let it sit over night and this morning it's dripping!!!!! I don't think I've done one thing to this truck yet where I got it right the first time. Oh well.
