The diff tag has no L on it. Your door tag says D5, an LS. I, personally have never trusted either. I open the diff, count the teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear, then I know what I'm running. I'd drop the diff cover, let it drain, and as it's draining, go get what I now know it needs.
The easiest way to tell is to drop the cover and look. If it's a open diff, you'll see the side and spider gears easy enough. An open carrier is just that, open to the side and spider gears, no positive drag applied at all. In a LS carrier, you'll either see an enclosed carrier, or steel/fiber disc plates on either side of the side gears. Side gears are on the 'sides of the carrier, and are what the axle shaft splines insert into. The spider gears are what the cross shaft inserts through. The spider gears are what walk around the carrier, leaving you with one tire not spinning while the drive wheel has no traction, spinning in the air.

Wow Bob, you sound like you know this stuff pretty well. Since I've never done this before I'll just open it up clean everything back up and take some pics. Then I'll silicone and put it back together and show y'all the pics and you can tell me exactly what I'm looking at and need. I have 1 qt. Royal Purple synthetic 75W-140 and 3 qts. of Super Tech 75W-140 (don't ask). I can mix these, right? I'll post the pic as soon as I get it open, drained and cleaned. Lastly, how long does the silicone need to cure before I add the gear oil?
Do not mix the Synthetic with the dino oil. It's a waste, as the gear oil's properties will be for the lowest grade. Either get more of the synthetic, or store what you have and get more of the dino oil. Your plan sounds like a good one. And, you'll learn volumes by doing it all yourself. The silicone can tacke a hour to become tacky, and overnight to fully cure. I usually apply it first thing after I clean the cover, and then let it set while I'm doing everything else. You want it to be soft, but not sticky.

I forgot to say the Super Tech is also synthetic and was $11 a qt.!
I've got all the differential bolts out except the top one. The tag reads 4L10 so it is an obvious 4.10 limited slip, right? So I do need friction modifier, right?
I was saying 20-30 for each axle and maybe 35 for the transmission. where do you buy your lubricants? my local kragens has gallon motor and transmission fluids/oils for 9.99 almost any brand. 12.99 for gear oil half(or close to) gallons, plus friction modifier...

Bought my stuff at Wally World, we don't have Kragens here. Mine is a 2wd. I swear every person I've talked to has literally told me a different story on the tranny fluid, I'm so confused. I haven't bought tranny fluid yet and I still need to get the friction modifier. What brand friction mod can I get? I'm too far from the dealer.
Wally world may have it. Any parts place will, too. What's the story about the transmission fluid?
I have 1 qt. of synthetic Royal Purple 75W-140 and 3 qts. of Super Tech of the same weight. I think I might take the 3 Super Techs back and go to O'reilly and get 3 more qts. of Royal Purple. Does the friction mod come in a million different brands?
I just want one plain answer on the tranny fluid. My dipstick says Mercon and I know I can't get that. I just want to get gallon jugs of ______ tranny fluid. Then there is the amount, I've heard anywhere from 12 qts-18 qts. Then there is the procedure: can't I just drop pan/drain all fluid and drain the TC and refill until full?
the technical name for the transmission fluid is "dexron III/mercon" any parts store in america sells it. typicly the shelf will have "dexron III/mercon" "mercon V" "mercon SP" "ford type F" and i beleive the new alison takes "mercon VI" but you can get your trans fluid at any store that sells an auto part. it is the most used fluid in america.
the reason that the capacity changes is based on your pan/lines/converter. the 2wd pan is shallower than the 4x4. and the converter depends on how hot it is and how much drains out. a 4x4 pan holds 7qts of fluid, you lose about another qt when you drop the filter out, and the tc usualy gobbles up another 4-5 qts everytime i do mine.
your pan should be 5-6 qts tops and the rest should be the same leaving you with roughly 11-12 qts used but i always get a few extra to keep on the shelf, you never know.

Did you read the label on the R-P?
"All viscosities of Max-Gear are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary."
Then there is the procedure: can't I just drop pan/drain all fluid and drain the TC and refill until full?
You can do it that way but you went get all the fluid out. There will still be some in the coolers, the lines, pump, valve body and the internal passages. And you may not be able to drain the torque convertor. If your TC is original it should have a drain plug but a lot of the replacement or aftermarket ones don't.
20 qts and the procedure is the best way to make sure it's all changed.

ah, forgot about that, old stock? you mean like me? lol i have lots of both including the newer bottles that read "mercon V also meets and exceeds mercon"
