definitely a common problem. I had to rewire mine and bypass the safety switch.. I think just about everyone who has owned a Bronco has had to either bypass the switch, or fix it with a new harness.
Yep, my 88's wiring harness was thrashed where it comes out the body and enters the tailgate...but it was from the PO hacking it up. The key switch mechanism was bad, Which the dash switch goes to, so neither would work. so what he did was cut it up and run 2 speaker wires up to the battery, so one way would open, switch them around and it would close lol. So I eventually found a yard with the wiring, gate was trashed, the Bronco was rearended and jammed the gate shut and rusted, so on of the yard guys just cut the gate open. The manager was all pissed saying he could have sold the gate for $225 Anyway, the hardest part is working in the small space of the tailgate.
It's not impossible with the tailgate up and the window up.
I folded the rear seat up for more room in the back, lay down on your back, get a good light shining on the motor location and use some small (1/4") drive or maybe a open end wrench.
