Rear window problem
Rear window problem
Hi everyone,
I have a 90 Bronco xl custom. The rear window was working and quit one day in the up position. I took the access panel off and was able to use a power pack to get the window up and down. I initially thought it was the motor but after further inspection I'm not getting power to the motor plug with the key on using the switch up front. Are there any circuit breakers or fusible links I should be looking at? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All.

hey arnie,
I had the same problem with my 89. the problem I found was in the wireing in the tail gate its self. The wireing that runs from the body to the tail gate had gotten pinched, and cut by the previous owner. I replaced them and it works like a champ. I have also heard alot about the saftey swicth going bad. those you can diconect the pigtial plugs and jump.

try using the key to roll the window up and down ( i have a 95 and the key rolls it up and down too..not sure if u do or not) if that works then its the safety switch that could be your problem
Other simple solutions:
1) Make sure the tailgate handle is pushed all the way down...sometimes of the handle is pulled up slightly it engages the safety mechanism.
2) Make sure the tailgate is pushed all the way shut in both corners. If the latch is not fully engaged the window has a tendancy not to work correctly or at all.
just my 2 cents

Normally I'd say to make sure the gate is closed all the way, but since yours is stuck in the up position it implies that it already is.
So your safety switch might be causing problems. I shorted mine out with a scotch lock. Now the window goes up or down no matter what position the tailgate is in.

I have an 86 Bronco, what I have found on several occasions it two specific problems. Both which are easy.
First, the dash up/down switch for the rear window, needs to be in the center position, sometimes on mine, it does not return to the middle position, this will not allow the rear window to function.
Second, as someone else mentioned, if tailgate is not shut completely, the rear window will not function.
The Window motors over time the plastic gear assembly parts will get ground up, and the window will be intermitten. A twenty dollar kit for the gear, and a hour of your time (after you done the first motor) will fix most of the motor problems.
An easy way to tell if the motor is trying to operate, check the dash voltage gauge. When you use the up/down funtion of the window, it should show some movement in the negative direction, or just some deflection. This indicates the motor is trying to operate, then most likely time to replace the internal gears of the window motor.
I have done all of mine over time.

Suggest that you look at several easy fixes first.
First, make sure the dash up/down control is in the center position for the rear window, I.E. it has returned to netural position, if not the rear window will not function.
Second, make sure the tailgate is securely closed, if not, rear window will not go up/down.
Check to see if motor is trying to work, look at the dash voltage gauge, if it moves during the up/down attempt, then the motor is good, most likely the gears are chewed up. This happens frequently, a kit is available to replace the gears alone for about 19-20 dollars, easy to do, after you have done one unit, it take about an hour to do the remove, replace the gears, re-instll. It took me maybe two hours to do the first, then easier after that.
Tailgate, motor is a tight fit, but not that bad.
Doors is another matter, you need to drill out the small indents in the steel door frame to get at the bolts on the motors. After they have been drilled out. It is easy to get to the required mounting bolts.
Regards Bob Hope its the easy stuff..switch on dash center, tailgate closed tight.

Well out not for sure what the problem was but after playing with all the connections at the moter and opening and closing the gate and using a jump pack to make it go up and down it works fine now. Thanks everyone.

I have a 96 ,the window worked fine till yesterday now its up and won't go down with either dash or gate switch,I tried pushing on the left side of the gate it worked so i ran the window up and down a few times ,opened and closed the tailgate loaded some stuff ,I checked it before i pulled off and it wouldn't go down again the switchs (both of them) seem to be getting power in the up position ( the volt needle moves) but not in the down,I pulled the access panel pulled the motor jumped it ,it works fine,I jumped the safety switch still won't go down now I'm catching hell trying to get the motor back on,is it easier with the tailgate down?and do the wires get screwed up that run fom the body through the tailgate is this a common problem help please!
I tried jumping the safety switch,no difference,I pulled the motor, works with direct current, having a hard time getting motor back in is it easier with the gate down? only up side of both switch work ,down is dead ,any ideas would be appreciated
juanspeaks....
Did the motor work in both directions with the direct current applied?
Tail gate down and window up works the best to install the motor. You MUST support the window very good with it fully extended that way.
Also, you might want to start a new post on this to get more info.....
