Have an '03 Escape and occasionally (never any pattern to when) when braking the pedal will pulse and I hear a thumping in the brakes. Best I can tell the ABS has activated for no reason. The ABS light never comes on and there are no codes present or in history. Was looking real close at the wheel speed sensors and the rings on the CV shafts and found the right front was split. Will that split ring cause this kind of problem and can I replace just the ring or do I need to replace the complete CV shaft?
you could just replace the ring but while your there just do it all the hole cvc shaft it doesnt take long about and hour also check the speed pick sensor it could have goten damed by the crack ring good luck < its about the same amount of work etherway >
Well I got an ABS ring from the dealer today ($35.00) and installed it this afternoon. Looks like a rust build up under the ring might be what cracked it. Cleaned everything up and put a couple of drops of lock-tite under the ring when I installed it. Only problem is I split the rubber boot over the ball joint. Was told I need new ball joint if I want to replace the boot and that entails a new control arm!!!!!!!!
You can replace the ball joint without replacing the entire control arm. If you get it from Ford, it will be the entire assembly but there are many aftermarket ball joints available that can be pressed into the control arm.
The problem is that by the time you pay someone to press it in, it might not be much more expensive to just replace the whole arm!
