1. my compressor has stopped engaging, I have checked fuses, the connector on top of the compressor, and tapped it with a screwdriver, and it won't do anything. can I supply 12v to one side of the connector to see if the clutch engages? I figured if I could rule out the clutch I could track down any electrical problem
2. can I safely use rotella 15w40 in a gas engine? benefits and downfalls of running the rotella??
on the rotella, my dad had a 125,000 mile 302 in a F-150, and started running shell 15-40. he said, "it shurely wont hurt the old thing." he ran it for a couple years, and then ran out of rotella, so put in some 10-30 and it started knocking as soon as he started it up and ran it. coincidence?
the high pressure switch is the one on the back side of the compressor, correct??
and the reason I asked about the rotella is that I bought a little MPG cruiser and it calls for 15-40 as the optimal weight so I figured, heck, why not run rotella, and I just wanted to make sure i wouldn't run into any problems with it
Find the high pressure switch jump it with a paperclip and see if the clutch engages, if it does it's low on freon.
Ditto. I just did it to mine this weekend.
We run 15w-40 in almost everything since we buy it by the drum. Never had a problem. I do know that if you have an older worn out engine that might burn a litter oil, switching to a litter thicker stuff may help.
well I tinkered with the truck some this evening and the good news is that the clutch and everything is ok, and I think I found my freon leak with my el-cheapo uv light, the fitting where the high pressure switch is had some dye around it and down the side of the drier below, I will replace the o ring tomorrow and get her charged back up!! thanks for the help on how to jump the compressor,
