The computer on your 86 does NOTHING to control spark from the ignition module. I know this because I removed the computer, emissions, and unplugged all the sensors, IAC, etc from the carbed 300 and it runs great. This will eliminate the need for a vacuum advance dist altogether.
The computer is what controls the ingition advance. It will just leave it in a fixed timing mode if the computuer is not working. It will run fine, just a loss of power and MPG. I ran mine this way for years until I realized it did not have any advance.

I gained power and mpg though. It ran like hell with all the sensors hooked up.
How does the computer control advance? If I advance the timing on the 302 motor by turning the dist., would the lack of computer somehow override this and keep it back at base 10 degrees? I had heard that the computer only controls dwell on newer setups, like the 87-95 mustangs. You still do the twisting dist thing to advance or retard. hmmm.... I'm worried about this as I'm going to use the 93 mustang distributor soon.....
I really don’t have a good understanding on how the computer controlled timing advance works. I have read you must disconnect the spout connect if you are going to change the base timing and if you try and change the base timing with the spout connector still connected the computer will keep it the same as you twist the distributor around.
If you have a feedback carb it is simpler to go back to the DS2 ignition system and a regular carb than to try fix a computer problem.
