Sounds like a trip to the shop is in order. I dont know much about the valve setups in the 7.3's, but could this be a lifter that has gone south? Are the valves adjustable on a 7.3?
No they are hydraulic roller lifters.
The rocker arms are pretty flimsy and the pushrods bend easily.
I strongly suspect something like that is going on due to the black smoke/missing.
If it were grey/blue smoke it would be more serious. Rings, melted piston, etc.
Easy enough to fix, pull the rocker pedastal assembly, replace parts. Bolt it back down.
Great, ill start the process of looking. Got a 50 50 shot of pulling the correct valve cover, haha.
Thanks a bunch for your help.
FWIW, I just R&R my valve covers this afternoon, retorqued the pedastals and injectors again in prep for a vacation trip and got it done in less than two hours.
It looks like an intimidating job until you do it a couple of times.
.
All the rocker pedastal bolts but one were still tight.
EVERY injector took about 1/6 turn to get to 120 inch pounds.
For some reason they really like to loosen up.
They weren't as bad as the last time that I checked them, but more time had gone by as well.
I think this is the last time I need to go back in for a long time.
