I have a F150 4.2 rwd standard cab pickup. 170,000 miles. While doing an empty run for 200 miles, at about 150 miles in to it, the front steering felt loose, so I tried to pull over to see why. While pulling over around 40 mph, the front end got real loose, and suddenly the right front wheel fell off and rolled away, smoking hot. Luckily I was able to stop safely, however no brakes at all.
Here is the damage. It appears the outer wheel bearing came apart first and the rotor then broke in 2, leaving a small hub with the lug nuts and studs still on the wheel. The rotor disc and pads are missing somewhere near bye. The end of the spindle is also damaged as well as the abs sensor.
I am doing the junkyard crawl today to locate parts, however I ordered a new rotor and pads locally for a start as all I have ever seen are rusty in yards, and i will change pads on both fronts at the same time. The fender was destroyed when the tire came off because the truck fell on the tire, caving in the fender.
